KiwiRoot watched in stunned silence as the RiverClan patrol headed out of the camps entrance with WaspSting. No! We don't know what they want, or what they are going to do. What if they accuse WaspSting, they seemed angry. Her thoughts raced as she stared at the entrance. The patrol must be behind the rise now. What to do, what to do? Follow them, a little voice in her head told her. She looked up, everyone was distracted, OmenStar was trying to settle things, most of her clanmates were either talking, or gathering for the border patrol that BlazingFire was announcing. If I'm going, it must be now...
WaspSting needs me, she decided after a bit. Keeping low, she crept toward the entrance, peering over the shoulder to see if anyone was watching, but no one was. She ran at full tolt forward and leaped out of camp, dashing over the rise and out of view. I'm coming WaspSting, don't you worry.
She quickly caught up to the patrol and began tracking them, always keeping a few fox-lengths behind. She slithered through the trees like a snake as they entered a forest, and placing her feet down as if she was stalking a mouse. As the dense layering of trees started to thin, she had to change tactic, staying behind a hill and keeping low until they had passed, then sprinting to the top again and doing the same thing. Once the cats had reached the camp, she moved more freely. GlidingIce would be furious if she found out I was doing this. In fact, all her clanmates would. No, I must keep an eye on WaspSting. She nodded to reassure herself then found a dying fern to hide under to watch the camp. She couldn't help but let out a small squeak as she spotted the leader, ShellStar, lying on the ground with large gashes in her throat and chest.
"WaspSting's vision..." it kind of made sense now. The leader need information. MistleSplash will be furious when he finds out who did it. Although she hadn't said it to anyone, yesterday when ShellStar said they had an apprentice, she was sure she knew who it was. But if PollenPaw was in there, she hadn't been when they had come to check. The other WindClan warriors on her patrol hadn't suspected a thing. They had thought it was the RiverClan cats trying to play tricks on them. Maybe they were right, but she still had a sinking feeling. WaspSting! She shook away her annoying thoughts as she saw his beautiful yellow and black-stripped pelt. The leader was taking him into his den. I wonder what they are talking about, but she didn't dare move, if she was spotted spying on another clan's territory, she would be in massive trouble. Instead, she wriggled further into the shade of the fern. Her tan pelt camouflaged well against the brittle fern and her white freckles were like the little pebbles that dotted the camp. Her breathing slowed; she was in no danger. For the moment, she sighed to herself. What would she say when she came back to camp? But that question could wait, all she needed to focus on, was keeping WaspSting safe.
"Clan meeting!" the leader, MistleSplash, called out to the gathered cats. She saw WaspSting huddle a bit further back on the rock, his ears were flat, and his whiskers twitched nervously. Whatever conclusion MistleSplash has made, it must not be good. Once everyone had settled down and turned their attention to him, he began his announcement. "Fellow clanmates of RiverClan, the time has come for me to choose a deputy. I am a young leader, and I need the support of a deputy. An experienced deputy." He paused as the cats began to murmur, when the voices died down again, he spoke, "LeapingPond, you have served your clan well, and we all respect you, I'm sure our clan would be grateful to have a she-cat as experienced and wise as you. But that is, if you except?" the clan turned quiet as they waited for the she-cat's answer.
LeapingPond dipped her head gratefully to MistleSplash. "I do," she smiled as the clan erupted with happy cheers. When a clan is going through a tough time, it is good to have a strong leader and deputy.
MistleSplash cleared his throat again and the RiverClan cats turned back to their leader. "We also have a new lead on our case." Although he hadn't specifically said what the 'case' was, every cat knew. "I'm going to go with a patrol to interrogate ShadowClan!" he announced to the RiverClan cats, they started swapping looks. She let out a small gasp of shock Did they think he was as crazy as KiwiRoot did? The leader kept on ranting, but KiwiRoot didn't hear, he was looking around, some cat was staring at her. The crowd was focusing on their obnoxious leader, and she thought no cat had spotted her. She looked back down hopefully, did WaspSting see her! But he was still staring at the crazy leader. Who is it?
