Chapter 13:

WaspSting paced in the RiverClan camp's clearing. The bottom of his pads ached as he paced. Ever since the patrol headed off to ShadowClan he had been pacing. What to do? What can I do? He wanted to run back to camp and see KiwiRoot, but MistleSplash had organized for a guard to watch him. His guard was a burly white and brown she-cat. She hadn't moved, just sat watching him with amber eyes. His ears twitched as he heard scuffling up at the top of the cliff that shadowed the camp. What the- his thoughts were cut off by an ear-splitting wail. The she-cat who had been guarding him looked up, her head swinging toward the sound, her ears pricked and her tail quivering. She was the only cat up, all the rest were sleeping in their reed nests inside the dens, and she had also been given the task of guarding him. The wail sounded again, and the she-cat suddenly leapt to her paws, a torn look splayed across her face, as if she couldn't decide what was more important: making sure he stayed in camp, or checking who was making the wailing sounds. Another woeful yowl sounded, and the guard came to a decision.

"You better be here when I get back," she growled, her ears twitching and she glanced up the cliff wall again.

He nodded. "I will-" Before he had finished speaking, the she-cat was running toward the sound of the wailing. WaspSting suddenly felt alone and exposed on the granite rock. He waited for a bit, flicking the rocks on the ground with a black paw. A shadow flashed behind him, and he wiped around startled, his imagination was starting to get the better of him. There was nothing there and he flattened his ears nervously. Once again, a shadow moved behind him, but it was fast. What! A tan pelt streaked toward him, and he closed his eyes, ready for the cat to ram into him, but it never came.

He opened his eyes to the sound of laughing. "Mouse-brain!" He gasped happily as he realized it was KiwiRoot.

"I missed you," he smiled. And suddenly realized something. "I'm guessing it was you who was wailing in the forest?" it made sense, it would distract the guard.

"Yep!" she mewed brightly.

"Because you missed me?" he asked, a smile playing on his lips, and he relaxed a bit.

"Oh, stop it, now, we must hurry, that guard will be back."

"We're running away?" he asked startled.

"Quick!" KiwiRoot glanced back at him with wide loving eyes. "We don't know what they will do, or how long you'll be here. Please," she added, "for me?"

"Okay," he agreed, and they started to race off. He felt sightly guilty as they raced through the ferns and brambles that littered the territory, dodging and weaving like rabbits as they run. RiverClan will be furious with me, then again, they did promise to OmenStar that I would be returned by the next day. When we get back it should be sunrise. RiverClan could deal without him, they didn't even really listen to him anyway, all he wanted right now was to be with KiwiRoot, who cares what happens.

They reached the brambles that marked the entrance to the camp, no one had spotted them on their way in, they had been very lucky. "We might get away with this," he mewed quietly as they padded through the entrance. His tail drooped as he walked in though. OmenStar was sitting with flat ears, her tail neatly laid over her pearly white paws. Her gaze was sharp as they walked cautiously inside.

"Now, where do you think you've been?" she asked KiwiRoot. It was obvious that the clan had noticed her disappearance.

KiwiRoot didn't hesitate, nor did she lie, "I tracked WaspSting to make sure he was safe," she mewed indignantly.

The leader let out a deep breath. "You could have caused a lot of trouble between the two clans, but I guess your reason wasn't too bad. I presume MistleSplash didn't let you go with permission?"

WaspSting twitched his ears guiltily. "No, he didn't."

"What did MistleSplash ask you?" OmenStar mewed, suddenly losing interest in how they escaped or if it was okay.

"MistleSplash took me to help them investigate ShellStar's death." OmenStar nodded thoughtfully.

"So does he think your vision came true?" she asked in a quieter voice. WaspSting nodded, his eyes glimmering self-consciously as cat began to gather to hear what he and OmenStar were discussing. His sudden disappearance would have been very suspicious for his clanmates, they didn't know yet that he had had a vision.

OmenStar noticed his discomfort and flicked her tail for him t follow. They got up and the cats watched them. WaspSting's ears twitched uncomfortably as he felt his clanmates hot gazes on his pelt. They reached the stone cave that the leaders' used as a den, pushing inside to stand inside its peaceful darkness.

"What did you find out?" she asked. WaspSting could barely see her face in the gloom of the sheltered den, but he was slightly thankful, it was easier to talk.

"ShellStar was in the clearing. She had a deep slit across her throat, and some through her chest." WaspSting shuddered, his fur brushing up at the memory.

OmenStar didn't say anything for a bit then asked, "How did she die?" he could make out the silhouette of OmenStar, her ears were pricked and her tail flicking from side-to-side in worry.

"We aren't sure. She was killed in the night, and the cuts she had were meant to kill."

"But didn't your vision have crows in it? A crow isn't that smart, nor are their claws sharp enough." The leader had picked up the mysterious part of this easily.

"That's true, but it the shadow of her body, there was a crow feather." His voice echoed slightly around the cave; it must be decently large, bigger than he could see.

"And what did MistleSplash think of that?" there was a tiny bit of humour in her voice, trying to lighten the situation a bit, but it only made him feel worse. She didn't know how much pressure he was under-going right now.

He scuffed the ground, feeling the little imperfections in the rock as his paw slid across it. "The crows feather was black like night, and the feather was in the shadow of her body," he paused, and OmenStar nodded, slightly impatiently, "so he went on a patrol to investigate ShadowClan."

"What?" OmenStar sounded slightly angered. "But they don't have any proof."

"I know, I tried to stop them, but they kept me in camp with a guard."

"We have to try and settle this." She thought for a moment. "Do you think they will have reached the camp yet?" she asked, looking up at him.

"No, but they are probably almost there."

"We must act fast then," she thought for another moment, "grab KiwiRoot and LappingNight, then meet me at the bramble entrance." He nodded, slightly dazed, but he shook himself and run outside, there was no time to waste.
