The sun hung lazily over the city of Aldencross, casting a warm glow over its crowded markets and winding alleys. From his perch in the dilapidated tower on the city's edge, Maelor Voss watched the bustle with a smirk. It was another dull day in the city, filled with nobles preening in their finery and common folk shuffling through their lives under the weight of new taxes and laws. In Maelor's eyes, it was all ripe for a little "artistic intervention."
He flicked his fingers, conjuring a series of tiny illusory fireworks that burst into bright sparks around his head. The display made him grin; it was the little things that entertained him. "Boring, boring, boring," he muttered, sweeping a glance across the city. "What this place needs is a bit of fun... chaos, even." He chuckled to himself, already feeling the thrill of his next scheme beginning to take root in his mind.
Below, the market hummed with activity. Maelor spotted his two allies, Ivy and Garret, weaving through the crowds. He waved his hands, casting a minor glamour that sent the scent of fresh bread wafting toward them. Ivy, a street magician with a knack for sleight of hand, wrinkled her nose. Garret, the wiry locksmith, sighed and shook his head. They knew it was Maelor's summoning signal. Reluctantly, they climbed the creaky steps of the tower to join him.
When they reached the top, they found Maelor sprawled on an old, faded armchair, grinning at them like a cat who'd just found a nest of mice. "Ah, my lovely accomplices!" he sang, sitting up. "I have a masterpiece in mind, and you two are just the people to help me paint it."
Ivy crossed her arms, arching an eyebrow. "You're planning something, aren't you? What is it this time? More illusions in the market? Turning the mayor's fountain into cheese again?"
Maelor's eyes gleamed with mischief. "No, no, no. This time, we're aiming higher." He leapt to his feet and swept his arms out dramatically. "The Council of Nobles meets in three days. It's their annual show of power, wealth, and utter arrogance. I say... we crash their party!"
Garret scratched his head. "You want to crash a council meeting? Sounds like a good way to get us all thrown in the dungeons... or worse."
Maelor dismissed his concern with a wave. "Nonsense! We're going to give them a night they'll never forget." He produced a small, glowing crystal from his pocket—the Amulet of Bedlam. "With this, we'll turn their pompous little gathering into a chaotic masterpiece. A bit of magic here, a bit of illusion there... and voilà! The council will be in disarray."
Ivy frowned, her gaze fixed on the amulet. "That's not just an illusion charm, Maelor. That thing could get out of hand."
Maelor shrugged, a sly smile curling on his lips. "That's what makes it exciting, dear Ivy. Where's the fun in certainty? Besides, it's not like we're going to hurt anyone. It's all just... entertainment."
Garret exchanged a glance with Ivy, who bit her lip, worry creasing her forehead. "We're in and out, right?" she asked cautiously. "A quick prank, and then we disappear?"
"Like shadows in the night," Maelor promised, pressing a hand to his chest as if swearing an oath. "I've already worked out the plan. We slip in during the banquet, plant the amulet, and watch the chaos unfold from a cozy hiding spot. It'll be over before they even know what hit them."
He conjured an illusion of the banquet hall, a grand space lined with glimmering chandeliers and rows of aristocrats laughing smugly. In his illusory scene, feathers sprouted from the nobles' robes, tables wobbled and danced, and cups overflowed with glittering foam. Maelor's laughter filled the room, a light, carefree sound that made Ivy and Garret share a reluctant grin despite their concerns.
"Alright," Garret sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "But if this goes south, I'm blaming you."
"Blame me all you want," Maelor said, his grin widening. "As long as we leave them in stitches. Figuratively speaking, of course."
