The courtroom of th e Magistratum in Aldencross was a monument to law and order. Ornate pillars lined the walls, and the air inside was thick with the scent of parchment and candle wax. At the center of this grand chamber sat Elara Thornwell, her spine straight, her expression cold. Her silver hair was tied back in a tight bun, and the emerald insignia of the Magistratum glinted from the front of her dark, impeccably tailored robes.
Before her knelt a young mage, his wrists bound in chains that glowed faintly with magic-suppressing runes. He trembled, his eyes darting around the room as if seeking some escape. There was none.
Elara surveyed the scene with an air of detached authority, savoring the moment. To her left, a clerk meticulously recorded the proceedings, and to her right stood two Mage-Watchers, silent and imposing. She raised a slender hand, signaling for silence, and the whispers of the courtroom ceased immediately.
"State your name," she commanded, her voice as cold and clear as ice. The mage swallowed hard, his throat bobbing nervously.
"G-Galen Marrow, my lady," he stammered. His voice cracked as he spoke, a sharp contrast to Elara's measured tone.
Elara's eyes narrowed, a flicker of annoyance crossing her otherwise composed face. "You stand accused of unlicensed magic use and possession of forbidden artifacts," she intoned, her gaze boring into Galen's. "You are aware of the penalties for such crimes, are you not?"
Galen's face drained of color. "I—I didn't mean to... it was an accident, I swear. I was only trying to—"
"Enough." Elara's voice cut through his pleading like a blade. She gestured to one of the Mage-Watchers, who stepped forward, producing a small, rune-inscribed stone. The relic emitted a faint hum, resonating with the suppressed magic in Galen's chains.
Elara leaned forward slightly, her eyes glinting. "This relic was found in your possession," she continued. "It is not an object one stumbles upon by accident, Mr. Marrow. You knew precisely what you were doing. The law exists to maintain order, to prevent magic from spiraling into chaos. You, however, chose to flout that law."
Galen shook his head, his voice growing desperate. "I was trying to heal the crops in my village! The fields have been blighted for months, and if we didn't—"
"A noble sentiment," Elara interrupted, her lips curving into a faint, condescending smile. "But the law does not bend for noble intentions. Unregulated magic is dangerous, and those who wield it without the Magistratum's sanction put society at risk."
She watched the mage squirm under her gaze, a flicker of satisfaction warming her. It was always the same: these foolish mages believed that their actions were justified, that they were somehow above the law. Elara knew better. Without strict control, magic would consume the world in chaos, as it had countless times before.
She turned her attention to the tribunal clerk. "Galen Marrow is hereby sentenced to life in the Null Chambers, where his magic will be suppressed for the safety of the realm. The relic will be confiscated and sent to the archives."
The clerk nodded, scribbling furiously, while the Mage-Watchers stepped forward to haul the mage to his feet. Galen's face crumpled in despair, his voice rising in a desperate cry. "Please, have mercy! I was only trying to help—"
"Mercy?" Elara tilted her head, regarding him with a cold curiosity. "Mercy is the refuge of the weak. The law must be absolute, or it is nothing."
As the guards dragged him away, she rose from her seat with an air of finality, smoothing out her robes. The room remained deathly silent, the audience staring at her in a mixture of awe and fear. Elara glanced at them, her eyes hard. "Let this serve as a reminder," she said, her voice carrying across the chamber. "The law is what stands between us and chaos. Defy it, and you will suffer the consequences."
