The mana-scarred landscape stretched endlessly before Edrin Daven as he made his way across the rugged terrain. The ground was uneven, pocked with deep fissures where ancient magic had torn the earth asunder. The sky above was a pale gray, muted as if the world itself had been drained of color. In this forsaken region, stories of strange occurrences and ancient rituals clung to the air like whispers in a haunted hall.
Edrin walked with the ease of a seasoned adventurer, his steps light and his senses alert. The faint hum of residual mana could be felt beneath his feet, seeping up from the depths of the earth, remnants of some long-forgotten catastrophe. It was said that this place was once the site of powerful experiments, a hub for mages who sought to push the boundaries of life and death. Now, it was a land of decay, marked by the folly of those who had tried to wield forces beyond their understanding.
He reached the outskirts of a small village nestled at the edge of the ruins. The place had seen better days; its houses were weather-worn, and the streets had the air of abandonment. The few people he passed offered wary glances, their eyes filled with the cautious hope that came from living too close to the unknown. They had called for him—a wanderer who dealt in secrets and strange jobs. Edrin was curious to see if this task would be more than the usual mercenary work.
At the village square, an elder waited for him. The old man's face was lined with the weight of years, his eyes sharp despite their age. He nodded to Edrin as he approached, his gaze lingering on the faint glow of the runes carved into Edrin's leather bracers. "You're the one they call the Wanderer," the elder said, his voice steady. "You came for the job, then."
"I did," Edrin replied, his tone casual. "Something about strange sightings near the ruins and a few disappearances?"
The elder's expression darkened. "Aye, that's the gist of it. But there's more to it than just missing folk. The ruins have always been dangerous, even before the disturbances started. People speak of magic gone wrong... and of a ritual that should have been forgotten."
Edrin's interest piqued at the mention of a ritual. "Go on," he said, folding his arms.
The elder hesitated, glancing toward the distant horizon where the ruins lay shrouded in mist. "The old stories speak of a mage who sought to create life itself—a ritual to bring forth new beings from nothing but mana, materials, and runes. It's a tale we've passed down for generations, mostly as a warning. Some believe there's truth to it, though I've never seen proof with my own eyes. But lately... there have been signs."
"What kind of signs?" Edrin asked, his curiosity growing.
"Strange creatures have been sighted near the ruins. Misshapen things, not quite animals, but not human either. Some say they're the results of experiments left unfinished... or the remnants of magic that never should have been unleashed," the elder replied, his voice lowering to a whisper. "And then there are the disappearances. Those who go near the ruins don't always come back."
Edrin's hand drifted to the dagger at his side, his fingers tracing the runes along its hilt. "Sounds like more than just ghost stories," he said thoughtfully. "You think there's any truth to the legend of the Creation of Life ritual?"
The elder shook his head slowly. "I'm not sure what I believe, Wanderer. But I know that whatever is happening out there, it isn't natural. The magic in that place is twisted—older than any of us. If the stories are true, then perhaps the ritual was more than just a madman's ambition."
The mention of the ritual stirred something in Edrin's memory. He had heard similar tales in other places, whispered in taverns and recounted by firelight—stories of mages who had tried to unlock the secrets of life, and of the terrible costs that had followed. But most dismissed such accounts as myth, warnings against the dangers of hubris.
