The office was quiet at last, and its former buzz of phones and chatter was now replaced by a soothing hush. Click! went the first light, followed in turn until only a soft golden twilight remained in Lim Corporation's long corridors. I sat back in my chair, closing my eyes for a moment to savor the absolute peace and quiet.
The whole of life would catch up with me after a while-- countless meetings, deadlines that loomed in front of me and could not be sidestepped any longer, an ever-lengthening itinerant working list. But for the first time in weeks, I paused. The city lay outside like a treasure chest filled to bursting under its blanket of stars, whispering ceaselessly in my ear that though I felt like I was on an endless treadmill of hard work and low return, life would never stop moving forward. Just as I was about to leave, someone spoke from behind me. It was a familiar voice.
"Kiara. Are you busy?"
When I raised my head, his signature smug half-smile was playing on Kyungsoos lips as he leaned against the doorframe. It was a balm in Gilead to have his presence calm the chaos of my day with such ease.
I smiled, brushing away a stray hair from my face. "Not really. Almost done with few report. What's up?"
He came inside, hands in his pockets and thinking like he meant it. She winced, "I was wondering... Do you wanna umm leave here? Go stargazing or something?"
It was a suggestion I had been caught off guard by. "Stargazing?"
"Uh huh," He replies, rubbed the back of his neck and became a little sheepish.
It was simple, almost childishly so, and yet conjuring a deep resonance within me. A break-a simple, spontaneous diversion, unlabeled by work or responsibility. I probably relaxed my shoulders without realizing it.
"Let's do it," I said, surprising even myself at the intensity of my eagerness. "Just give me five minutes."
His face lit up at my reply, that little flicker of excitement radiating to me, re-igniting a sense of adventure not experienced in a while.
About fifteen minutes later, we were driving in Kyungsoo's car with the windows rolled down, soft night air wrapping around us like an embrace. A quick stop at a convenience store for some chips, cookies, and random spur-of-the-moment buys followed.
"Do we really need this much junk food?" I laughed as he threw in an assortment of snacks, his eyes twinkling with excitement.
"Yes," Kyungsoo answered, deadpan. "It's for the vibes."
"Do we really need this much junk food?" I laughed as I observed him throwing different snacks into the basket, a spark of excitement in his eyes.
"Yes," Kyungsoo replied in a voice devoid of vibrancy. "It's for the vibes."
He had this manner about him. Most times quiet and reserved but suddenly out of nowhere, a cluster of dry humor would catch me completely off guard, leaving me grinning, unable to summon any resistance to his charms at that. Easiest sort of company. I didn't have to strive hard at anything except being me.
As we drove farther away from the city-the music, quiet in the background-Full-slipping into a silence that wasn't awkward but a safe place where words didn't need to be spoken. I leaned my head against the window, watched the twinkling lights of the city fade, finally disappearing and yielding to a sea of sky.
"It feels great, doesn't it?" Kyungsoo said looking over at me, his expression soft.
"Yup," I murmured. "It really does."
