So... there has been a LOT of set up the last few parts. I promise I have a plan, it'll all make sense later! -B

//James POV//

I look into the eyes of the girl I assume to be Wren. She looks fierce, as I always imagined her, but there's also a lot of shock. Did I do something wrong? She looks shaken.

"You speak dragon?" she said disbelievingly. Sky leans next to her and nudges his head into her shoulder.

"Hi, friend," he says to me.

"Hi," I say. "Uh, yeah. I speak Dragon."

This is a big revelation. Can I not speak to scavengers? I can definitely speak Dragon, but can I speak Human?

"Why are you all alone in the forest?" Wren demands, stepping towards me.

"I'm trying to find my dragon friends," I confess, getting rather nervous. "I've been looking for them for a very long time. Well, actually, I've kind of been in jail. Then I escaped. But I'm looking for them."

Sky looked at Wren, his face lit up with joy. "Wren, we found another human who likes dragons!"

"Calm down, Sky," Wren says protectively. "We don't know if he's friend or foe."

"Definitely friend," I promise. "Please don't hurt me. My name is James."

"That's a strange name, James," Wren says thoughtfully. She then says something different, and at first I don't understand- when she says it, her voice is higher. Then a second passes and my brain translates it. She said, "I wonder what he's named after."

"James," she says loudly, waving her hand. "You're spacing out."

Again, her voice changes- this time it's lower and sounds like a growl, and then my mind translates it.

Ohhhh. She's switching between Human and Dragon. So I CAN speak Human. But both languages sound like English to me.

"Sorry," I say. "Just... thinking."

"So. Do you have a pet dragon too? How can you speak Dragon?"

"Uhhh... yeah." It occured to me that Wren probably didn't know about animi. (A/N. Animuses or Animi? Honestly idk bc both sound kinda goofy)

"Oh. What's his name?"

I looked at Wren, not sure what to say. I could say one of the dragonets, or Clam... but it didn't feel right. I decided to say the name of my best friend in this world.

"His name was Reef. But he's... he's dead now. So I'm looking for my other friends, Sunny, Glory, Tsunami, Clay, and Starflight."

"I'm sorry," Wren says, this time with sympathy. She places a protective hand on Sky's head. "Well, I wish you luck finding your friends." She begins to climb onto Sky's back.

"Well, maybe you could actually

"Wait!" I yell. "You can trust me. I know Murderbasket." (A/N: If you haven't read Dragonslayer go read it cuz none of this will make sense).

Wren side-eyes me suspiciously. "You know Murderbasket?"

"Yes. Well. His real name is Deathbringer." I tried to say the last part in Human, and I think it works, because she understands. "He's terrified of scavengers, you know. Because of you."

Wren lets out a short laugh, but Sky looks a little jealous. Wren notices this and whispers something in his ear. He nods and his jealous looks disappears.

"How do you know Murderbasket?" she asks, choosing not to use his real name.

"Oh. Uh." I was just telling her I knew him to gain her trust- but I didn't expect her to actually ask me where I met him. "I worked with him. As... a seer. I am the seer. For dragons. The Dragon's Seer." This was gonna be my backstory for people who don't know about animi, I guess. I crack a smile. "I can kinda see the future, and I used to work for dragons."

"Then why don't you know where your dragon friends are?" she asks bluntly. "Also, what the HELL?! YOU CAN SEE THE FUTURE? WHERE THE HELL DID YOU LEARN TO DO THAT?!"

Shoot, I think. Maybe I shouldn't have told her.

"I don't know where I got my abilities," I mumble. "I was born with them, I suppose. But I don't know everything. I just know what my visions tell me. And I get prophecies."

Her eyes turn angry. "You sound like someone from my own village."

Oh shit, that was a mistake. I grimace. I forgot that she had fake seers at her village.

"I can prove it," I say, looking at her with steely eyes. "Your name is Wren." She hesitates, knowing she never told me her name. "Your dragon is Sky, a SkyWing with no fire. He's the twin brother of Peril, who has too much fire. He was abandoned by his mother at a young age after she was ordered to kill him, but his mother took mercy on him and hid him. When you were seven you were meant to be killed by dragons as a 'sacrifice' but they only did that because they don't like you. Your brother Leaf, who is a year older than you, has been trying to avenge your death ever since, but he thought that the dragons were the problem, when really it was the humans." I breathe in.

Wren looks at me in shock. "You said you didn't know everything, only some things. Why are we important enough to get in your visions?" Sky nuzzles her shirt. "This human knows everything about us," he mumbles. "Weeeeird."

"You guys will play a large part in this world," I explain. "I would tell you, but then it won't happen. But you guys will be safe. You'll stay together through all of it."

This was enough for Sky to trust me. "Awww, Wren, can we keep him?"

"Sky, you know that humans generally suck," she scolded him. But she sighed. "Fine." Sky bent lower so I could get on Sky's back, behind Wren. I thanked her, but she stopped me.

"You're not off the hook. You have a lot to explain. The only reason we're taking this detour is so I can learn the future."

I swallow hard. "alright" I say in a small voice.

meanwhile in the SeaWing kingdom...

//POV - unknown//

He watched the five dragonets approach silently; he looked at the paper in his hand and wrote, Subject 303 is not with the Dragonets of Destiny. Commence a search for the boy at once!

He sent the paper off into the air, and it disappeared into thin air.

He pressed a hand to his watch, and he too disappeared. He closed his eyes for a moment as he was transported, and when he opened them, he was standing in the middle of a city. He looked around, making sure he was in the right place and smiled.

Welcome back to San Fransisco.

Oooooh cliffhanger 👀 Who is this dude? Why does he want James? How is he in Earth? Also, Subject 303? Is this how James came to the World of Wings of Fire?

Well, you'll have to wait like five to ten more chapters to find out. Because until then, this book will follow (mostly) the storyline of the Lost Heir. But this is LORE.  Yeah, my story is going to have a LOT of this.

Hope you liked this one!
