| Short story pt. 1 |

"Y/N, my future wife, how are you doing today?" An all too familiar voice called out. You rolled your eyes and extended the coffee cup in your hand out for him to take.

The sooner he got what he needed the faster he would leave. "I was doing fine" you retort and flash Bucky a cocky smile.

"Ouch, you wound me. Well, we're off on another mission, don't miss me too much" Bucky said and leaned forward into the coffee wagon, smirking up at you, hoping to get a kiss.

"I can assure you, Bucky. I will not" you shoot him a mocking wink and he gasps as you push him back, your palm on his forehead and he puts his hand over his heart, feigning pain.

"See you later, Y/N" Buck called out with a laugh as he pulled Bucky after him. "Bye Buck" you call out in return.

Your girlfriends giggled at the attention you received from the two majors. Buck was your friend and somewhere along the lines, Bucky was too.

Bucky had ever since you two'd met, asked you to marry him every time he came home from a mission.

He had done so, for the last years he had been in Thorpe Abbotts, since he'd seen you the first time.

You had love for him, sure you did, he always checked up on you. He always put a smile on your lips, but you knew how he slept around to drown his minds cry for help.

So you decided long ago to not become another one of them.

So, every time Bucky came back home. He'd ask you to marry him, you didn't know why he kept asking, eventually it became a thing between you two.

A joke.

You wondered if you one day said yes, what he'd do.

He would probably run for his life, John Egan settling down with one wife? Not a chance.

Half a day later, after taking care of the mechanics, the pilots finally returned.

The mission was successful, of course not without some losses, but everyone had made it.

You were ready with coffee and food for the crews and you were ready for the usual celebration.

"Y/N Y/L/N! Will you marry me today?" Bucky called out, for everyone to hear. Neither of you cared, everyone was used to it.

"No, Bucky. Not today either" you retorted with a laugh, Bucky laughed and kissed your cheek and you handed him a drink in response.

"One day you'll say yes" Bucky assured you. "What will you do if I one day do say yes, Bucky?" You retorted with a laugh.

"I will marry you in a heartbeat, Y/N. No need to think twice" Bucky claimed and saluted you with his drink as everyone around you cheered you on.

"Keep dreaming, Egan" you retorted and walked off, getting more drinks to the pilots.

"You look good, Y/N" Curt called after you. You shot him a wink as you disappeared from their view.

-

After another mission.

While holding out two cups of coffee as Bucky and Buck were walking up to you, Bucky smirked.

"Y/N Y/L/N, will you marry me today?" Bucky asked and Buck cackled as he accepted the cup from you while you handed Bucky the other cup.

"No, Bucky. Not today either" You told him and kissed his cheek before clapping it gently. Then you left once again.

"Why do you keep trying?" Buck asked with a chuckle. "We're meant to be, Buck. What can I say?" Bucky retorted as he watched you walk away.

-

Another mission.

You stood ready with two cups of coffee as usual, one for Buck and one for Bucky.

Yet they never came. Your worry for them increased and you eventually placed the cups on a table and went off to find Rosie.

"Rosie? Curt?" You called out, both of them being dragged off to interrogation. "Y/N..." Curt trailed off as he was pushed into the back of the truck.

"Where are they?" You asked with dread, fearing the answer. "Where is he?" You added, the two looked down and you narrowed your eyes.

"Tell me!" You shouted.

"They're gone, Y/N. They didn't make it, I'm sorry" Rosie said.

You froze as they were driven away. His words echoed in your head. Tinnitus filled your ears as your eyes teared up.

Your throat closed and you swallowed deeply, despite the painful lump in your throat.

You couldn't speak, you couldn't think. You couldn't think about anything but John.

His horrible laugh echoed in your memories of him, his wide smile as he laughed.

His lips on your cheek. On your skin.

"I'm sorry, Y/N" Kenny said as he passed you with his crew to fix the returned planes.

Emptiness filled your stomach as you felt the brutality of the war.
