"Major Y/L/N. I'm sorry for your loss" Bucky's words got through the tinnitus ringing in your ears.
You remained still, frozen. In denial and shock. "He tried to save his crew and he went down with his ship" Buck added.
Both Buck and Bucky had seen Curt go down. He was gone.
"We'll give you some privacy. Let us know if there's anything we can do" Buck said and squeezed your shoulder.
Once the door closed you broke out of your frozen state. You began to sob loudly as you felt the pain sink into your chest. Your hand grabbed at your heart as you sobbed.
Your cries could be heard outside of the barrack. Bucky and Buck froze in their steps and so did everyone that walked around the barrack.
All of them knowing it was you and it was because of the downfall of Biddick.
Your fiancé.
You two were gonna get married when he returned from this mission. A deal you'd made because neither of you wanted to wait any longer— living like you did in a place like you did, you never knew when it was over.
As ironic as it was.
You fell to your knees and continued sobbing. Your heart was writhing in pain, you clenched your chest and felt your entire body giving in to the grief of the love of your life.
"Curt, come home" you sobbed, praying— that he wasn't dead. That he had gotten out, that he had survived somehow.
You knew that wasn't the case, because war isn't that nice.
"Please" you sobbed and let out a final scream. Refusal to admit that you knew he was gone.
Lemmons and his crew walked up to Buck and Bucky, who were both still frozen in their tracks.
"I think she needs someone" Lemmons said with tearful eyes. Your wailing alone made most of the soldiers here feel the pain.
"When she has faced it. She's in denial" Bucky said and looked back at the barrack.
"We can't just—""—Kenny. If you walk in right now there's a big chance she will dent your face" Bucky warned him.
The guy only meant well and everyone knew, but he couldn't stand hearing you suffer like this all alone.
But Kenny listened to Bucky and nodded his head.
Your sobs slowly died down and you slowly became dizzy and groggy. You passed out in exhaustion and heartbreak. You laid on the floor till your fellow pilots dared to enter the barrack.
Buck was the first to touch you. He lifted you gently from the floor and placed you on the bed. Bucky sat down on a chair next to it and lit a cigarette.
"I'll wait here till she wakes up" Bucky told everyone. Buck and Lemmons both nodded and pushed everyone else out.
Bucky had known you the longest, he knew you wouldn't be open to support from anyone else, not at first. It had to be him.
Bucky stayed by your side for the four hours you had passed out, when you woke up, you felt the brutal reality return.
You had been caught in your dreams, where Curt was alive. Tears brimmed in your eyes as you realized and then you felt a presence.
You looked to the side as you sat up and saw Bucky. He finished his cigarette and put it out before leaning forward onto his elbows.
"Y/N" Bucky's voice was low and filled with sympathy. "No, no, no" you whimpered and shook your head with dread.
Bucky sat down on the side of your bed and pulled you into a hug. You cried silently as you fought to settle into your new world.
A world where Curt Biddick didn't light up your world every time he walked in. A man that was no longer able to walk the earth.
He was gone.
"We all got you, Y/N. We'll make them pay"
Words of a promise that Bucky kept. Buck, Rosie, Lemmons— all of them.
The end
