THE BEACH WAS void of any sign of life, except the little girl sitting just far enough from the water, the sun was shyly peeking through the clouds as the waves crashed against the rocks.

Her legs pulled over her chest, her chin rested on her arms as she blankly stared at the horizon. The calm environment was interrupted by distant footsteps, making the girl turn around.

Her gaze was met with three teenagers, looking right at her, guilt etched against their expression, Cleo fidgeted for a while before taking a step forward. "Luna..." she started but the girl didn't give her time to talk.

She got up, brushed the sand off her pants and walked towards the water. "Can we just stop this?" Emma intervened "Dr. Denman has a DNA sample, Lewis is leaving and all we're doing is arguing?" She said

Luna turned around, a smug expression on her face "Okay" she coldly said "Apologize" she demanded

"What?"

"The three of you" the youngest added "Apologize for treating like an immature little kid" she clarrified

Of course Luna knew what she was doing, three teenagers apologizing to a nine year old was gonna take a toll on their pride

The three teenagers exchanged uneasy glances, their pride visibly wounded by Luna's demand. Cleo's cheeks flushed, and she fidgeted with the hem of her shirt, avoiding Luna's piercing gaze.

"Luna, come on," Cleo tried again, her voice softer. "You know we didn't mean to hurt you. We were just-"

Luna's eyes narrowed. "Apologize," she repeated, her tone firm and unyielding. She stood there, hands on her hips, watching them squirm. A part of her knew this was unfair, but another part-the part that remembered how harsh their words were, how she was kept in the the dark-felt a strange satisfaction.

Emma sighed, breaking the silence. "Fine. I'm sorry," she muttered, a flicker of frustration in her eyes. "We should have told you Lewis was leaving. I just... didn't think you could handle it."

Luna's eyebrow arched, and Emma bit her lip, realizing too late that her apology had missed the mark. Before Luna could fire back, Cleo stepped in.

"We're sorry, Luna," Cleo hurriedly said, her voice sincere now. "You're right. We should have trusted you, and we didn't. I'm sorry."

The last teenager, Rikki, smirked, tilting her head as she looked at Luna. "Oh, come on, Luna," she said, her tone dripping with playful sarcasm. "I'm so sorry for treating you like the little kid you totally aren't." She rolled her eyes slightly but softened it with a quick, knowing smile. "Guess you showed us, huh?"

She reached over and gave Luna's shoulder a light squeeze, adding with a grin

Luna couldn't help the smile that tugged at her lips as she nudged Rikki's hand away. They shared a look, a spark of sisterly mischief passing between them.

"Apology accepted," Luna said, a hint of triumph in her voice. "But remember-I'm not the little kid you think I am."

Turning back to the ocean, she felt, for the first time, like she'd earned their respect. The three teenagers stood there, humbled yet smiling, as Luna savored her small victory against the backdrop of crashing waves.

"Lewis is leaving today," Cleo said, her voice laced with sadness as she looked out over the waves, clearly torn.

"Can we make it in time?" Luna asked, a playful spark lighting up her eyes as she glanced at the others, her earlier triumph still fresh.

Emma nodded, determined. "If we hurry, maybe. But we'll have to move fast."

Rikki rolled her eyes, but a grin tugged at the corner of her mouth. "Oh, now you want to rush us, huh?" she teased, nudging Luna. "Alright, let's go."

Luna laughed, taking off down the beach with the others close behind. The tension between them had softened, replaced by the warmth of shared purpose and the thrill of a last-minute adventure together.

When they arrived at the bay, they were met with Dr. Denman's boat departing, taking Lewis away from them, Cleo didn't seem to want to give up. "Come on, if anybody can catch her, we can" she declared, ready to jump in the water.

"Wait" Rikki said, holding her back "that might defeat the purpose of all the secrecy, don't you think?"

Cleo settled back "You're right" she said, defeated

"But are we just gonna let him go like this?" Cleo intervened

"Like what?" A familiar voice asked

As the girls turned around, their eyes widened at the sight of Lewis standing on the dock, looking just as surprised to see them as they were to see him.

"Lewis!" Luna exclaimed, relief flooding her face. "We thought... you were leaving with Dr. Denman."

Lewis gave a sheepish smile, rubbing the back of his neck. "Please." He dismissively said "you didn't think I'd buy that stuff about being a good scientist...did you?"

The tension that had hung over them all day seemed to evaporate in an instant. Emma's mouth dropped open. "Wait, so you're not leaving?"

Lewis shook his head, grinning. "Not today, anyway."

Rikki crossed her arms, smirking. "Well, you sure know how to make a dramatic exit, don't you?"

He laughed. "What can I say?"

Luna, who had been watching with a smile, stepped forward. "We were ready to swim after you, you know," she said, a spark of pride in her voice. "Even Cleo was about to go full mermaid in front of everyone."

The group laughed, and Cleo blushed, nudging Luna. "Alright, alright, no need to remind me."

As they stood together on the beach, with the sun breaking through the clouds, it felt as if they had all grown a little closer. The misunderstandings and arguments of the day were behind them, replaced by a bond that felt stronger than ever.
