A CHUCKLE escaped Rikki's mouth, drawing irritated glares from her friends.
"Sorry," she said, holding up her hands in mock surrender, though a smirk lingered on her face. "But seriously, why is Luna playing that sad melody again?"
"For the fish's funeral," Luna replied, her tone exasperated as she stared at Rikki, clearly flabbergasted by the lack of sympathy.
Emma shook her head, narrowing her eyes at the blonde. She leaned over to Cleo, giving her a reassuring pat on the back as Cleo sniffled, clearly taking the moment more seriously.
Meanwhile, Luna returned to her music, her expression determined and focused. She played the melody with a quiet reverence, fully committed to her job as if honoring the tiny fish's memory was the most important task in the world.
"I know he was old," Cleo sniffled, her voice breaking a little, "but it's still a shock when it happens."
Luna squinted at her, a skeptical look crossing her face. She glanced over at Rikki, who caught her gaze and raised an eyebrow, clearly sharing Luna's opinion.
The youngest stifled a chuckle herself but continued to play the solemn melody, putting on a serious face for Cleo's sake. Despite her own doubts, she respected Cleo's feelings enough to keep her music going, even if a part of her was finding the whole scene a bit over the top.
"Sorry" Cleo apologized, wiping her tears "I know i have to be strong" she said, struggling to hold back her sobs.
Emma shook her head "You don't have to, not at a time like this" she said, rubbing Cleo's shoulder in a comforting manner.
"All the great times the two of us had together" the brunette sniffed "I can't believe they're over. Poor Pluto, he was such a good fish" she exclaimed
"How?" Rikki asked, her feet resting on the bed while she played on her phone. "It was just a fish"
Cleo took a deep breath as she stared into an invisible point "He was loyal, he was honest" she answered
"Did he do tricks?" Luna asked, pausing the song
Cleo frowned "No, of course not"
Rikki lowered her phone "Did he..." she trailed off " I don't what do fishes do?"
"The same stuff we do" Cleo lashed out "but in the water"
"Sorry, just asking"
Luna got up from the chair, stretching "So, binning or flushing?" She asked
Cleo put the box down "Neither" she said as she got up, rushing to the bathroom
Emma yurned around shooting a glance at the two girls "For Luna, i can understand. She's a kid."
"Hey !" Luna protested
"She really loves them" Emma persisted, glaring at her friend
Rikki rolled her eyes "Hello?" She sarcastically said "Fishes have no longterm memory, they completely forget who she is every three seconds" she scoffed "That is not a basis for a relationship"
Luna buried herself in the chair, praying for Cleo to walk out of the bathroom and put an end to the argument.
"If it's not about you, you're not interested, you can be really self-centered sometimes" Emma remarked
"That is so not true"
"Oh yeah? What was the fish's name?" She retorted, Rikki went quiet for a second
"Bubbles?" She asked
Luna let out a sigh when Cleo finally walked out of the bathroom, Rikki stared at her, guilt flashing over her features. She got up and walked out of the room.

Standing on the bai, the three girls stared at the water "Should we wait for Rikki?" Cleo asked
"This might take a while" Emma answered
Luna sighed.
She remembered when her cat, Lily died, her dad promised he'd feed her but he didn't, which became obvious by increased weight-loss in the animal. But instead of a funeral in fron of a bay, Lily got a trash bag.
"Luna, are you there?" A voice called out, pulling her from her thoughts, she looked up at Rikki. "It's over"
"What? When did you get here?" The youngest asked
"Just now, Emma and Cleo are inside"
Luna nodded, surprised that she hadn't noticed Rikki arriving. She took a deep breath, trying to push away the memory of Lily. It was strange how Cleo's attachment to a fish could bring up old, painful thoughts she'd long tried to bury.
"Did they...finish?" Luna asked, gesturing vaguely toward the water.
Rikki gave a half-hearted shrug, glancing back towards the house. "Yeah. Cleo said a few words, and Emma said something about how every life matters or whatever." Her tone was dismissive, but there was a hint of understanding in her eyes, as if she recognized that Luna's distance had come from a deeper place.
Luna felt the corner of her mouth twitch up. "Typical Emma," she said softly, forcing a small smile.
"Yeah, you know how she is," Rikki replied. There was a pause, then she added, almost hesitantly, "You alright?"
Luna hesitated, surprised by the question. "Yeah, I'm fine. Just...thinking."
Rikki stayed quiet, her expression softening with unspoken understanding. She didn't push, and Luna was grateful for that. Instead, Rikki gave her a small nudge with her shoulder. "Come on, let's go inside. Cleo's probably still tearing up over Pluto, and Emma's on emotional-support duty."
Luna chuckled, the sound shaky but genuine. "Right. Back to reality."
They started walking back to the house together, a quiet solidarity forming between.
"Wait, why are tou holding a fish?"
