April 11th, 2603, 0800 hundred hours FOB Malius, Special Region
Mccoy made his way to the base's motor pool, joining the rest of the 1st Platoon for a briefing by their new CO, 2nd Lieutenant Michiru Richards. "Hey, Mccoy, what's up?" Staff Sergeant Troy Anderson from the 2nd squad asked as Mccoy settled beside him. "Another day, another dollar. How about you?" Mccoy responded. "The same," Anderson replied. "Heard anything about the new LT?" Mccoy probed. "Yeah, word is she's Static's kid and quite the spitfire," Anderson shared. "Who fed you that line?" Mccoy asked with a chuckle. "Corporal Lewis," Anderson disclosed. "Seriously, Anderson? You know that when it comes to rumors ninety-nine percent of what Lewis says is nonsense," Mccoy pointed out. "Ha, yeah, you're right," Anderson chuckled. "Attention!" Sergeant Ghost shouted as the lieutenant came into view, clad in Mjolnir Armor, her AIR ASSAULT helmet tucked under her arm, her naturally teal hair cut short at the neck. Standing at 6 feet 9 inches, Michiru was of average height for the augmented soldiers of Sentinel 1. "Alright, listen up, I'm only going to say this once: our mission is simple—scout the region and establish contact with the locals," Michiru said. "Do I make myself clear" Michiru asked "yes ma'am" everyone said in unison "all right then mount up" Michiru ordered and with that the sixty operatives got into their M68 Bisons and rolled out the front gate post. "So, where are we heading first on our little road trip, LT?" Mccoy joked. "We're making a quick stop by Dalnus Hill to pick up Fireteam Redhawk, then we're taking the Southeastern Road down to a town called Lentia," Michiru replied. The convoy covered the twenty miles to the UNSC FOB on Dalnus Hill, linked up with Fireteam Redhawk, and then started heading southeast towards Lentia. Mccoy gazed out of a viewport to see a pair of UNSC FSS-1000 Sabers gliding past the convoy. "Damn, those flyboys must be having the time of their lives with no other aircraft in sight," Mccoy remarked. "True, their only concern would be those dragons, but a thirty millimeter can easily shred those oversized lizards," Wolf responded. "So, Mccoy, what are you most excited to see in the Special Region?" Wolf asked. "I'm eager to witness more of the magical stuff. What about you?" Mccoy answered. "I'm curious about the exotic wildlife and the cuisine they have," Wolf declared. The convoy screeched to a halt. "What the hell?" exclaimed the driver. "What's going on, Corporal Davis?" Michiru inquired. "LT, you might want to take a look at this," the Corporal beckoned as Michiru approached the driver's compartment. "Oh God," she whispered in horror. "All elements, dismount," Michiru ordered. As they exited the vehicles and Mccoy reached the lead vehicle, the sight in the valley below turned his stomach. A slave camp, encircled by pikes each bearing a person, lay before them. "I count eighty guards and at least a couple hundred captives," Shadow reported, peering through the scope of his M52 Sniper Rifle. "Alright, change of plans," Michiru declared, her voice seething with anger. "We're going to storm the camp, free the prisoners, and kill every last guard". "Hell, yeah let's do this" Wolf said as they got their weapons ready and made their way to the camp.
Slave camp nineteen miles from Lentia.
For months, Rieko Katou's existence had been a living nightmare at the camp as the guards did unspeakable things to her every day. While Rieko was praying for salvation, a guard overheard her and burst into the tent, yelling, "Be quiet bitch, or I will—" His threat was cut short as something pierced his skull, ending his life abruptly. Rieko and the others screamed, huddling in a corner as the guard's body collapsed to the ground. Another guard came into the tent to see what was wrong only to meet the same fate as his companion. Rieko's ears were filled with the cacophony of other guards shouting as the distinct echo of gunfire pierced the air, accompanied by the guards' final screams. "Someone, kill those demons!" she heard a guard bellow amidst the chaos, just before the guttural roar of a chainsaw revved into life, followed by a fresh chorus of screams. "What is that thing" a guard yelled moments before an explosion rang out. Rieko noticed the other captives in her tent, terrified and having no idea what was going on. "It's going to be okay; we're being rescued," Rieko reassured them in a soothing tone. "I'll go out and see what's happening," she declared as she crawled out of the tent. Making her way to a guard hut, Rieko passed the bodies of several guards, their armor riddled with bullet holes. Peeking through the window, she saw a robot with purple hair gripping the bandit leader by the neck, while two soldiers clad in futuristic armor stood to the side. "That's all I know, I swear! Now please, let me go," the bandit leader pleaded with the robot. "I don't think so," the robot hissed, transforming its left hand into a gun and aiming it at the bandit leader's head. "No, please, have mercy!" the bandit leader screamed. "We don't give scum like you, mercy," the robot retorted as it shot the bandit leader. Rieko gasped in horror as the robot and one of the soldiers turned to face the window, prompting Rieko to dive behind some nearby crates in fear. Rieko heard the heavy thump of boots approaching her hiding place and curled up tightly. The soldier hoisted the top crate and tossed it aside as if it were a crumpled piece of paper. "Are you some kind of killer robot?" Rieko asked, her voice trembling with fear. The soldier knelt down and slowly removed their helmet, revealing a human male with reddish hair and green eyes. The soldier spoke words that Rieko couldn't understand, and upon realizing this, he wrote in the dirt with his finger, "I'm Mccoy. What's your name?". "I'm Rieko Katou from Tokyo, Japan," Rieko stated in Japanese. The soldier muttered a curse under his breath before yelling to another soldier, who quickly ran off and returned with a third soldier. This soldier removed their helmet, revealing a young woman with teal hair and eyes. She knelt down and said, "I'm Lieutenant Michiru Richards, and Mccoy told me that you're from Japan, is that correct" addressing Rieko in Japanese. "Yes, it's true," Rieko said. "Okay, are there any more Japanese civilians in this camp?" Michiru asked Rieko. "No, there aren't. The people I was captured with were sold off to different camps," Rieko informed Michiru. "Okay then, wait here while we prepare to get you and the others out of here," Michiru said as she stood up, put her helmet back on, and walked away. A few minutes later, a group of transport aircraft landed just outside the camp. Their rear doors opened to reveal medical personnel who assisted Rieko and the other newly freed individuals onto the aircraft and took them to Malius Hill, where they were given medical attention and their first proper meal in a long time.
