Chapter 12: A Sudden Realization

Xie Lian paced within the palace walls, his mind consumed by the past and present troubles. Feng Xin approached him, concern etched on his face.

"Crowned Prince, you need to take a break. Your exhaustion is palpable."

Xie Lian's thoughts, however, were elsewhere. A sudden realization struck him like a bolt of lightning.

"I gave him my umbrella," he muttered, lost in thought. "It felt natural, as if I was meant to do so."

Feng Xin's expression turned puzzled. "You're scaring me, Your Highness. Are you certain you haven't been in the sun too long?"

Xie Lian's eyes, though, had glazed over, his mind racing. "When I visited Yong'an, I met a young man who sought no refuge and saw no future. I comforted him with acts of human sympathy and gifted him my umbrella."

Feng Xin listened attentively, connecting the dots. "That explains your unusual tan on your delicate skin."

Xie Lian's epiphany crystallized. "I gave Hau Cheng my umbrella... This must have been him. I've been so focused on everything else, I neglected what was right before me."

He spun toward Feng Xin, determination burning within. "Tell Lang Ying to stay here; I'll journey back to Yong'an alone."

Feng Xin's hand shot out, halting Xie Lian's departure. "No, Your Highness. You've been saying things that make no sense since your crowning ceremony. You need to slow down, meditate, or pray to the Martial God."

But Xie Lian was already gone, sprinting away with a singular focus. Feng Xin had no choice but to follow, leaving Mu Qing to guard Ling Ying.
