The music thumped and pulsed in the background, but for Sune and Lina, it felt like a distant echo. The energy in the room had shifted; the giddy thrill of celebration began to mix with an undercurrent of tension, thick and heavy. The energy between Sune and Lina crackled unnoticed by the throngs of partygoers, a current that neither dared to express.
Lina struggled to contain herself, a battle raging within her. As Sune leaned in, her witch’s hat slightly tilted, laughter dancing in her eyes, all Lina could think about was how desperately she wanted to close the distance between them, to kiss her and capture that vibrant spark. But she couldn’t. The secret she bore pressed down on her, a weight too heavy to ignore.
“Lina!” John’s voice burst through the moment, interrupting her thoughts. He’d swaggered over, still dressed as a vampire, his swagger more pronounced after having downed a few cups of punch. “Have you seen Stella? I was thinking... maybe we could spin some tales about her haunted house?”
“I think she’s busy with guests,” Sune replied, tilting her head, trying to shake off the tension. “But let’s check the cellar; I hear it’s the coolest part of the mansion.”
“Great idea! This party needs some adventurous vampire spirit!” John declared dramatically, his arm raised like a bat.
With a roll of her eyes and a smile, Sune led the way, stealing glances at Lina who momentarily caught her breath—a rush of desire and confusion welling up inside her. How could she explain to Sune the hunger that simmered just beneath her skin? Something primal that didn’t just crave blood, but demanded closeness, intimacy, love.
As they descended into the dimly lit cellar, the atmosphere shifted further. The laughter and chatter above faded, replaced by an eerie silence intertwined with the subtle dampness of the earth. The low hum of music felt like a heartbeat echoing through the space.
“I’ll grab a drink from down here,” John said, trying to be the life of the party even in this secluded spot. He rifled through a cooler filled with questionable beverages, leaving Sune and Lina alone for a brief moment, the weight of unsaid words hanging in the air.
“Lina,” Sune began softly, her voice a whisper. “I feel like there’s something you want to tell me.”
At that moment, the tension was palpable. Lina leaned closer, her heart pounding in her chest. The flickering light barely illuminated the softness of Sune’s face, but enough for Lina to see the trust sparkling in her eyes. It made her pulse quicken with both anticipation and fear.
But just as Lina opened her mouth, ready to reveal everything—the affection, the secret of her nature—John let out a sudden laugh that shattered the moment.
“Hey, look at this!” he exclaimed, brandishing a bottle as if he’d just found hidden treasure. He turned to Sune, “You’ll want to try this! It’s definitely got a bit of a kick!”
Suddenly, there was a noise from deeper in the cellar, drawing their attention. A chill washed over them as Lina felt compelled to investigate. She couldn't shake the feeling that something was off—the air felt heavy, charged with an eerie premonition.
“Let’s check it out,” Sune said, curiosity overcoming her better judgment. Together, they moved cautiously toward a shadowed corner, uncertainty gnawing at their hearts.
As they rounded a barrel, the sight before them stopped them in their tracks. There, in the dim light, lay Stella’s lifeless body sprawled across the cold floor, her costume wrinkled and torn, a sharp contrast against the dark stone.
“No… no…” Sune’s breath caught in her throat, eyes wide with disbelief. “Stella!”
Lina felt the room spin as the reality of what lay before them in the chilling silence sank in. Panic clawed at her insides. She suppressed the urge to run, wanting nothing more than to comfort Sune, who was now frozen in shock, her face pale.
John, still oblivious, wandered over just in time to see the scene. His smile faded immediately, replaced with a look of horror. “What happened?” he breathed, stumbling backward.
“I don’t know,” Sune whispered, tears beginning to well in her eyes. “She was just… here. She was hosting a party. How could this happen?”
Lina stepped closer, her instincts flaring. Inside, she felt the pulse of her vampire lineage awakening her hunger, her senses heightening. It was overwhelming, an urge to both protect Sune and shield her from the horror before them. “We need to get out of here and find help,” she urged quietly, trying to keep her voice steady. “We can’t stay close to her body.”
Shaking with fear, Sune nodded, the weight of shock pushing down on her. As they turned to leave, Lina glanced back one final time, knowing that their perfect Halloween celebration had been irreversibly shattered. The darkness that lurked beneath the laughter had claimed its first victim, and the night was only just beginning.
