The sun streamed through the kitchen window, illuminating Sune’s hopeful smile and casting soft shadows on the where the trio stood. After the emotional morning, Sune could see that the tension among her friends hadn’t completely dissipated, but it felt less heavy now—more manageable.
Lina took a deep breath, the exhilarating thrill of the new day feeding her resolve. She turned to Freya, who was standing with her arms crossed, still a pillar of strength in the face of the unknown. “Freya,” Lina began, hesitating for just a moment, feeling the weight of their differences, “I wanted to ask you… Can I show Sune some of the vampire stuff?”
Freya arched an eyebrow, a hint of surprise flashing across her face. “Vampire stuff? You mean the abilities you have?”
“Yes,” Lina replied, her excitement bubbling just beneath the surface. “Sune deserves to understand this side of me, to see that I’m more than just a vampire. I think if she can see the control I have, it might ease her mind.”
Freya studied her friend, her wolf instincts fluctuating between caution and support. The rivalry between their kind had been long-standing and fierce, but seeing the way Lina cared for Sune—how sincere she was—made Freya rethink her prior perceptions. “If you believe it would help Sune, then yes, show her. Just… be careful.”
“Thank you,” Lina whispered, relief washing over her features. “I promise I won’t let anything happen to her.”
“Don’t underestimate our past either,” Freya said, the flicker of seriousness returning to her eyes. “Vampires might have their charms, but our instincts are sharp. Keep that in mind.”
“Understood,” Lina nodded, a confident smile breaking through. “But I think she'll be good for it. She can handle herself—she faced down danger last night after all.”
At that moment, John appeared at the kitchen doorway, stretching as if trying to shake off the weight of the morning. “What’s all this talk about danger?” he asked, a teasing lilt in his voice. “You know I’ve saved Freya from more trouble than I can count.”
Freya shot him a mock glare. “And yet it was you who needed saving last night. I’m not sure you’re quite up to speed.”
John grinned, feigning innocence. “I’ll have you know our friendship has never been stronger! Being thrown into a chaotic fight tends to bring people together.”
“Glad to hear you’re in good spirits,” Blade chimed in, stepping into the kitchen behind John, curious about the lively banter. “Did you two figure out the mystery of who killed Stella yet?”
Freya turned back to the group, noticing the shift in mood. “Not yet. But we’re working on it. Lina wants to show Sune some of her… abilities.”
“Abilities, huh?” John exchanged looks with Blade, surprise flickering across both their expressions. “Are you both sure that’s a good idea? Vampires and werewolves hanging out, demonstrating their strengths? I recall that turning out almost fatal in the past.”
“That was the past!” Lina interjected, indignation rising. “Sune needs to see the real me, not just the vampire myths that run rampant.”
Blade shrugged, leaning against the counter. “At least she’s not burying people in the woods anymore, right?” He gave a teasing smile, but there was an undercurrent of concern as he exchanged glances with Freya.
“Will you two quit worrying?” Freya said, rolling her eyes. “Lina has her head on straight. Plus, Sune is not some naïve human. She’s already been through more than enough to earn a seat at our table.”
“Speaking of tables,” John said, blowing a dramatic sigh, “Blade and I are going out for a drink to catch up—rekindle those bonds of friendship crushed under the weight of supernatural rivalry. Care to join us, or are we leaving you all to your vampire arts?”
“Definitely going to take a rain check on that,” Lina shot back, her excitement at showing Sune her abilities shining through. “You boys can handle your own drinks. We’ll stick around and let Sune explore.”
“Sorry, can’t miss out on this chance,” Blade smirked as he nudged John to follow him outside. “You’ll be fine without us, right?”
“Go on,” Freya said, waving them off. “Just don’t get into any trouble while you’re out.”
“Us? Trouble? Never!” John laughed, exiting the kitchen. Blade followed him with an easy smile, the two walking out into the crisp afternoon.
As soon as the door closed behind them, Sune turned back to Lina and Freya, her excitement melding with nerves. “So, what are these abilities you want to show me?”
Lina’s eyes sparkled with mischief. “Follow me! But first, let’s grab some supplies from the living room. The sunlight is still on our side, and I want to make the most of it!”
Freya watched them with an amused smile, feeling a mix of pride and protectiveness. “Just remember, Lina. You have to be careful with what you show her. It can be a lot to take in, and you don’t want to scare her off.”
“I know,” Lina replied, determination firm in her voice. “But I refuse to hide who I am; not from her, not anymore.”
Sune followed Lina out of the kitchen and into the living room, her heart racing with anticipation. They were about to step into a deeper understanding of each other—an intimate journey that transcended the fears and anxieties of the night before. Sune could hardly believe it, but she felt herself ready to accept whatever magical revelations awaited her; she trusted Lina, and for the first time, she felt ready to embrace the supernatural world that was slowly unfolding before her.
