i checked my reflection in the hallway mirror one last time, pulling a few loose strands of hair away from my face. i had packed for the weekend trip with tommy in a state of excitement, but as the moment to leave approached, a wave of nerves started to creep in. this wasn’t just any trip; this was the first time tommy and i were really getting away together, just the two of us. a small getaway, sure, but meaningful in more ways than i had expected.
they’d only been dating for a few weeks, but it felt like longer. maybe that’s because i already knew so much about tommy - his history with the 118, his transfer to air support, and how the firehouse still considered him part of the family. and yet, despite how intertwined our lives seemed to be, there were still little gaps between them. he had never met eddie or buck. i hadn’t heard all of his stories. there were still questions unanswered, and the weekend might be the first chance to fill in some of those spaces.
the soft rumble of a familiar car engine outside caught my attention. i smiled to myself, heart skipping in anticipation. i grabbed my weekend bag and headed for the door, finding tommy leaning against his truck, looking as relaxed as ever.
“hey, beautiful,” tommy said, grinning wide as i approached. he took my bag without question, tossing it in the back with ease.
“hi,” i greeted back, leaning up to press a quick kiss to his cheek. “you’re right on time.”
“i aim to please,” he quipped, opening the passenger side door for me. “besides, you’ve been working too hard, and i’m going to make sure you get some actual rest this weekend.”
i slid into the truck, watching as he circled back to the driver’s side. tommy had this unshakeable confidence that made him so easy to be around. it was as if no matter what was happening around them, tommy was calm and collected, grounding her in the process.
as we pulled away from the curb, i exhaled, letting the weight of the week fall away. “i still can’t believe you found this place. it sounds perfect.”
tommy glanced over at her with a satisfied grin. “you haven’t even seen it yet.”
“i trust you,” i replied with a laugh, but there was truth behind it. i did trust tommy. maybe that’s why this relationship felt like it was moving at just the right pace - it wasn’t rushed, but it wasn’t stagnant either. we just fit.
the drive was longer than expected, taking us up the scenic coastal highway. the wind from the ocean whipped through the open windows of the truck, and i let my thoughts drift. every so often, tommy would point out landmarks, small towns we passed, or make a joke to fill the silence. he was easy company - something i had needed desperately after the stress of my new position at the firehouse.
by the time we arrived at the cabin, the sun was just starting to dip below the horizon, casting long shadows across the shoreline. my breath caught in my throat as i took in the view. the small cabin sat perched above the rocky cliffs, with a winding path that led down to a beach. the ocean stretched out endlessly before them, bathed in warm hues of orange and pink.
“wow,” i breathed, stepping out of the truck and taking it all in.
“right?” tommy joined me, slinging an arm around my shoulders as we stood there together. “wait ‘til you see the inside.”
i let him lead the way, still marveling at the landscape. the cabin itself was quaint, with a rustic charm that made it feel cozy and intimate. inside, the open layout revealed a large stone fireplace, plush furniture, and floor-to-ceiling windows that framed the ocean view.
“this is... incredible,” i said, spinning slowly to take it all in. “i can’t believe you planned all this.”
tommy shrugged, modest as ever. “you deserve a break. thought this might be the best way to force you to relax.”
