Chapter 44

On the outskirts of Zaofu, Opal and Bolin get off her bison together.

"All right, let's do this!" Bolin turns to Opal "Saving the Beifongs and saving our love, because I vow to repair the rift that has grown betwixt us and make us whole again!"

Beside them, landed Echo as Violet giggles. Lin jumped off the dragon and angrily walked between the two, giving Bolin a shove.

"You. Zip it. Now." Lin points at him "I had enough of your babble on the way in."

"Yes ma'am," Bolin covers his mouth.

Violet slid off Echo and landed beside Bolin. Lin crosses her arms and turns to them.

"Remind me again why we brought the guardian with us?" Lin questions. "This is highly dangerous."

"Cause I'm bored," Violet replies with a smile.

"Mhm," Bolin nods. "And who better to help us then her?"

"Did we run it by the avatar, or Mako?" Lin asks.

"What they don't know won't hurt us." Opal states "Let's just focus, she's here now and we will appreciate any help we can get."

The four of them walk to the edge of the mountainside, crouching out of sight they look down at the city.

"Kuvira tore down all the domes. Why would she do that?" Opal questions.

Lin pulls out a spyglass, surveying the city "She's got a whole battalion of troops stationed there. There's no way we'll be able to spot anything useful from here. We'll have to go in for a closer look."

"Don't bother," The group whips their heads around and stare in shock, to see the elderly toph standing behind them. "All the prisoners have been moved."

Lin looked shocked by her mother's sudden appearance "Uh... hey, Chief."

"Hey Chief," Toph replies, looking amused.

Opal runs and hugs Toph "Grandma Toph!"

"You were only up to my waist the last time we were together." Toph says as she rubs the top of Opal's head.

"Don't explode," Violet mutters, seeing Bolin becoming hysterical.

"Oh, man! Ohh, I can't. This can't be happening!" Bolin waves his hands in front of his face, looking excited. "You're my hero! My name is Bolin. I'm dating your granddaughter, I mean, kind of. I may have screwed that up, but that's why I'm here and you're my hero! Oh, I said that. Can I have a hug too?"

"Is he okay?" Toph asks.

"He's fine," Violet replies "he's what we call special."

"Hm?" Toph turns to her "Hey, I know you, don't I?" She snaps her fingers "Ah, it's you fire cat!"

"Fire cat?" Violet tilts her head confused.

"That's what she called your predecessor," Lin clarifies for her.

"That checks out," Violet chuckles.

"So, you already checked the city for Su? How did you know she was captured?" Lin asks her mother.

"I've been living in the swamp and keeping watch on Zaofu through the vines." Toph replies. "By the time I got here, they were gone. I snooped around town and heard that they were taken away to some nearby prison camp."

Opal turns to Bolin with newfound bitterness in her voice "Where would that be?"

"There's a factory and reeducation facility not too far away." Bolin explains, looking ashamed.
