Konoha's skyline glowed under the soft hues of dusk, its buildings casting long shadows over the streets as the day's last light faded. Naruto stood atop the Hokage Rock, a familiar vantage point he hadn't visited in a long while, gazing out over his village. The peace he had fought so hard for felt like it was carved into every stone, every building, every life below him.
He took a deep breath, letting the scents of the village fill his senses. Laughter drifted up from the marketplace, and he could see children racing through the narrow streets, their cries of play echoing up to him. It was a peace that was hard-won, a world he had nearly sacrificed everything to protect. Yet, as he looked out over it, a nagging sense of unease gnawed at his thoughts.
"Dad!" Boruto's voice snapped him out of his reverie. Naruto turned to see his son making his way up to him, his blond hair tousled from training. Boruto's eyes shone with pride, and Naruto felt a surge of warmth as he watched his son approach. Here was a reminder of what this peace was for.
"Hey, Boruto. Thought you'd be too busy with training to come out here," Naruto greeted, pulling him into a quick hug.
Boruto smirked, brushing his hair back. "Just wanted to check up on you. You've been up here for a while now, looking all broody and mysterious."
Naruto laughed, ruffling Boruto's hair. "Just thinking, that's all. Guess I'm not used to having time to just... think."
They shared a quiet moment, watching the sun dip lower, painting the village in orange and gold. But as the last sliver of light disappeared behind the mountains, a chill crept into the air—a chill that felt out of place.
Naruto's smile faded. He could sense it now, the faint but unmistakable pressure of foreign chakra. It was powerful, dark, and wrong. In an instant, every muscle in his body tensed, his instincts honed from years of battle flaring to life.
"Boruto, go back to the village and find the others. Now," he said, his tone low but firm. He saw the confusion in Boruto's eyes, the flash of defiance, but then Boruto nodded and sprinted off without a word. Naruto felt a pang of pride—Boruto could sense the danger, too. His son had grown strong.
Naruto turned, his gaze sweeping across the forested horizon. Then, like a whisper on the wind, they appeared—a figure standing at the edge of the village. Cloaked in a strange, shimmering light, the figure seemed to blur and shift, as if caught between two worlds. His eyes were a chilling shade of white, cold and devoid of emotion. Naruto's breath caught in his throat. There was no mistaking it—this was an Otsutsuki.
But something about this one felt different, more sinister, more... decisive. Naruto took a steadying breath, his fingers flexing as he readied his chakra. He had faced the Otsutsuki before, but he had always known they would return. He just hadn't expected it to be so soon.
In a flash, Naruto was on the ground, standing before the figure. The Otsutsuki regarded him with a calm, almost clinical detachment.
"Seventh Hokage," the figure intoned, voice smooth and otherworldly. "Your world fascinates us. Such potential, such stubborn resilience." The Otsutsuki's lips curved into a thin smile. "And such power."
"What do you want?" Naruto's voice was firm, but he could feel his pulse quicken. His senses were on high alert, every nerve braced for a fight.
The Otsutsuki tilted his head, examining Naruto with those piercing, pale eyes. "Your world has become an obstacle to our plans. I have been sent to correct this, particularly you, as you pose a significant threat to our Project Ascendence."
The name sent a jolt through Naruto. Project Ascendence?
Before Naruto could respond, the figure's hand shot out, releasing a wave of chakra so dense it distorted the air around it. Naruto barely had time to react, forming a barrier of his own chakra to counter it. The impact sent a shockwave through the ground, rattling nearby buildings and leaving a scar on the land.
Naruto ground his teeth, pouring more power into his defenses. He could feel the strength of this Otsutsuki—it was greater than any he had faced before. But he wouldn't back down. Not with his village, his family at risk.
With a sudden surge, Naruto broke through the Otsutsuki's attack, lunging forward with a Rasengan blazing in his palm. But the Otsutsuki was fast, faster than he'd anticipated, vanishing into thin air and reappearing behind him.
"I wonder, Hokage," the Otsutsuki mused, a hint of amusement in his voice. "How much are you willing to sacrifice to protect this world of yours? Project Ascendence will reshape everything. Your resistance is meaningless."
The next few moments blurred as they exchanged a flurry of blows, each one stronger, sharper, more ruthless than the last. Naruto's mind raced, piecing together the Otsutsuki's movements, but the figure seemed to anticipate his every move.
And then, in a heartbeat, Naruto saw it—the Otsutsuki had turned his attention away from him, his gaze shifting to something behind Naruto. It was Boruto, who had returned despite Naruto's orders. He stood there, eyes wide, realizing the danger too late.
"No!" Naruto roared, throwing himself between Boruto and the Otsutsuki just as the enemy's attack fired.
Naruto felt the impact—a wave of burning, suffocating energy—before everything went dark.
