Nikolai Russo
Nikolai found himself replaying the encounter with Luca, the seething threat barely contained in Luca's eyes. The man was a walking thorn, determined to unearth whatever lay between Nikolai and Nikita. And Nikolai, frankly, was done with being anyone's second option.

It wasn't in his nature to show fear, but as he watched Nikita pace the room, her usual composed face strained with worry, he knew he couldn't just sit back.

"If you keep pacing like that, you're going to wear a hole in the floor," he drawled, leaning against the doorframe, a playful smirk dancing across his face.

She stopped, glaring at him. "How can you be so calm? Luca's not going to just walk away."

He shrugged, unfazed. "Because I've faced men worse than him."

Her eyes narrowed, still not convinced. "I don't need you to protect me, you know."

"Trust me, I'm aware," he said, stepping closer until there was barely an inch between them. He lowered his voice, his breath warm against her cheek. "But maybe I don't mind it."

For a brief second, her eyes softened, but she quickly masked it, taking a step back. "This isn't a game, Nikolai. Luca knows too much. He'll find a way to exploit it."

"Then let him try," Nikolai replied, an almost reckless confidence in his tone. "I'm not going anywhere."

She raised an eyebrow, her lips curving into a half-smile. "You're seriously impossible."

He smirked, a glint of challenge in his gaze. "Maybe that's why you can't stay away."

The Deal

The tension remained high as they discussed their next move. If they wanted to secure their power and end the threat of Luca, they needed to act—and fast.

As night fell, the two found themselves in Nikolai's private study, their heads close together as they pored over maps, documents, and plans. It was as if they were in their own world, a bubble that no one could penetrate.

"Are you sure about this?" she asked, her tone serious.

He looked up at her, his dark eyes intense. "If we want to win this war, we can't afford to be soft. And we can't afford to let him think he has an edge."

"Fine," she said, her tone equally determined. "But I'm not letting you take all the credit."

He chuckled, reaching out to tuck a strand of her hair behind her ear. "Wouldn't dream of it."

An Unexpected Visit

Just as they finalized their plans, there was a sharp knock at the door. Nikolai and Nikita exchanged a look, both instinctively reaching for the guns they'd hidden nearby. But when the door swung open, they found Sofia standing there, a coy smile on her face.

"Am I interrupting something?" she asked, her voice dripping with sweetness that was far from genuine.

Nikita's expression hardened instantly. "What are you doing here?"

Sofia sauntered into the room, her gaze lingering on Nikolai just a little too long. "Oh, I just came to see how you two lovebirds were doing. It must be exhausting, planning your little coup against Luca."

Nikolai's jaw tightened, but he kept his voice calm. "You don't belong here, Sofia."

She ignored him, instead fixing her gaze on Nikita. "You really think he's going to choose you over...everything he's built?"

Nikita didn't flinch. "I don't need him to choose anything. But I'll make one thing clear: Luca may think he has allies, but he has no idea what's coming."

Sofia's smile faltered for a moment before she forced it back. "We'll see about that," she said before turning and striding out of the room.

Once she was gone, Nikita turned to Nikolai, her expression fierce. "We need to act. Now."

The Ambush

Later that night, Nikita and Nikolai, along with a small team of loyal guards, prepared to ambush Luca and Sofia's group at a rundown warehouse where they had arranged a "meeting." It was risky, but if it worked, they would finally be free of the constant threat.

As they crouched in the shadows, waiting for their enemies to arrive, Nikita felt a strange calm settle over her. She glanced at Nikolai, who was watching her with an intense, unreadable expression.

"You're ready for this?" he asked softly.

She nodded. "More than ready."

He smiled, a rare, genuine smile that made her heart skip a beat. "Then let's make sure they never see us coming."

Moments later, Luca's car pulled up, and Sofia emerged first, her face a mask of disdain as she scanned the area. Nikolai and Nikita exchanged a glance, silently counting down. Three...two...one—

They burst out of the shadows, guns raised, and chaos erupted.
