The morning fog clings to the ground like a thick gray blanket, wrapping everything in an eerie embrace. I shiver as the cold air bites at my skin, and i pull my jacket tighter around me.
Molly walks beside me, her breath visible in the damp air, and i can see the uncertainty in her eyes, „How long we walked for?" she asks looking at me.
- Around an hour, Isaac replies looking at the map.The fog makes everything feel disorienting, like we're wandering through a nightmare.
Isaac and Aidan are few steps ahead, their silhouettes barely visible through the mist.
I can hear the crunch of leaves under their feet, but it feels as if the world around us is holding its breath. The trees loom like dark sentinels, their branches reaching down all the way to the ground and for some reason, i can't shake the feeling that we're being watched:
- Does anyone else feel uneasy? I say stopping.
Aidan comes to me holding a bottle of water:
- Yes, i feel that too, but we should arrive at Bay Lake in no time, it's right after that hill according to the map.
- And yet, no sign of Anna, Isaac says turning his head to look at us.
- Maybe she's not even in the forest, Molly says.
- We have to keep looking, if she's not at the Lake then we'll have to go back to Molly's house and call the police, Isaac says.
- It's gonna be a waste of time, the house is way too far now, we should go to the main road from the lake and take the bus back to the town, i say drinking from the bottle that Aidan handed me.„I'm so tired„ i mutter finding myself leaning against a tree. „This feels like the nightmare i had last week" i say to myself. The silence is suffocating me and the expression on Molly's face got me worried:
- What's going on? I ask grabbing Molly's hand.
- Do you hear that? She asks.
I stop to listen and i hear a whistle from the left:
- It's my mum! Molly screams.Without a second thought we take off towards the sound, adrenaline surging through our veins.
„She's running away" Molly yells as she runs up the hill.As we push deeper into the forest, the whistle fades, swallowed by the thick of canopy. I look back at Aidan and Isaac, who are struggling to breathe while running up the hill, their faces etched with concern.
„Stay together" Isaac yells, but the urgency in his voice only fuels my panic. Just when we think that we're getting closer, i catch a glimpse of movement, a flash of white in the distance. „There she is!" i point up the hill, my heart racing.
„She's getting away!" Molly screams „And you won't catch her" a voice can be heard in the distance, „Dad?" Molly asks collapsing on the ground.
Everything was silent around us, Aidan and Isaac were running to check on Molly, but i had to stop and look up the hill. Anna had disappeared into the vastness.
- Molly, are you okay?? Aidan says pouring gently water on her face.
- Wake up! I scream leaning down besides her.
- She's breathing! i think she just passed out, Isaac says checking her pulse with a furrowed brow.
- Where did Anna go? i ask standing up.
- I have no idea but how did she managed to get up the hill so quickly? Aidan asks.
- We need to search the lake area, i say trying to stay focused.
- But Molly didn't wake...Isaac says pointing at her.
- Let's take a break here, i say.I'm worried sick for Molly but i think she heard something „She screamed „Dad" out of her lungs...what is really doing on here?" i think to myself.
It's so cold, i'm freezing laying down next to Molly on the leaves with her head leaning against a tree trunk:
- Isaac, give me a blanket please, i say on a trembling voice.
Isaac handed me the blanket and as i cover Molly, i whisper to her ear „ Please wake up" and kiss her on the forehead.I'm blowing warm breath onto Molly's hand and as i turn my head around i see Isaac looking down at me:
- Everything okay? I ask.
- Yes don't worry, i just have a quick thing to do.
- What is it? I ask.
I let go of Molly's hand and stand up, but when I turn around, Isaac hit me on the head with a bat.My vision got blurry and as i try to scream for help, i could only see Isaac's shoes hitting me in the face.
„Good night Cassie" it's all i hear before i pass out.
