SOMETHING IN PORPHYRION'S voice told Penelope he wasn't bluffing. That usually was not a good sign.

She felt like she would rather be in a psychiatric ward, rather than fighting this ripped dude. It was true, her friends had done some stuff greater than Bat-Man. But as the giant raised his spear, she knew there was no way she could deflect this strike.

That's it. She thought she would wanna die in the sea drowning, but supposedly you don't always get what you want. But she looked behind and saw Leo, only a few tendrils away, and Piper, who was trying her best. She had to try.

A sacrifice, someone said behind in her head. A sacrifice of light itself.

She shook her head trying to get it out of her head but the voice persisted. I intend to only help you. A sacrifice of light will buy you enough time.

Okay, she thought. Penelope looked around her, and at a sudden, she started glowing. She could always glow gold, which was a real show off, but this time, she resisted the light within her. Her hands were dark like night itself. She felt like she was loosing her life, every second she glowed dark. Penelope looked around and saw dead vines wrapping around the giants legs, as he tried to get rid off them but they persisted.

This is not me, she thought.

This must be what you do to get everyone to safety. The voice inside her head called.

"AAARRGGGHH!" Poryphiron shouted out loud. She saw golden ichor flowing down his legs, where the vines had wrapped themselves. Her energy kept draining, as her legs felt like rocks. But Poryphiron wasn't dead or gone yet. He was still there, breaking a vine everytime it wrapped itself.

You have all the power, the voice said. Give light to night, and he'll go. I promise.

The voice felt like the exact thing you know you shouldn't trust, but you do, and you were right.

At a sudden, she heard Jason scream. Penelope heard him begging her to stop, but she did not. She wanted to see how much of this sacrifice would lead to the giant suffering. She screamed, and the earth burst open. Darkness took over and a army of dead soldiers, from the Nazis to the American soldiers to tribal hunters, charged at Porphyrion.

"Got it!" Leo yelled.

"Sleep!" Piper said, so forcefully, the nearest wolves fell to the ground and began snoring.

The stone and wood cage crumbled. Leo had sawed through the base of the thickest tendril and apparently cut off the cage's connection to Gaea. The tendrils turned to dust. The mud around Hera disintegrated. The goddess grew in size, glowing with power.

You can relax now. The voice comforted her. She fell on her knees, her hands on her thighs and her head bent down as it throbbed. She hated the light, how her mother had died in broad light, but worse, her dreams were always dark.

"Yes!" the goddess said. She threw off her black robes to reveal a white gown, her arms bedecked with golden jewelry. Her face was both terrible and beautiful, and a golden crown glowed in her long black hair. "Now I shall have my revenge!"

The giant Porphyrion backed away. He said nothing, but he gave Penelope one last look of hatred. His message was clear: Another time. Then he slammed his spear against the earth, and the giant disappeared into the ground like he'd dropped down a chute. Thousands of bones turned to dust in a second.
