THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY CHAPTER TEN 13th of october 2014
the soft hum of the movie played in the background, but olive barely noticed. she lay sprawled on the plush carpet of liliana's room, surrounded by a fortress of pillows and blankets, her mind swirling with a whirlwind of thoughts. the familiar scent of popcorn mingled with the floral air freshener, creating a cozy atmosphere that usually soothed her. tonight, however, it felt heavy.
liliana, perched on the edge of her bed with a bowl of popcorn in hand, turned to olive, her brows furrowing with concern. "you seem really out of it tonight, olive. is everything okay?" her voice was gentle, laced with genuine curiosity.
olive took a deep breath, staring at the ceiling as she gathered her thoughts. "it's just... everything feels so overwhelming right now," she confessed, her voice barely above a whisper. "i love being with the boys, performing for our fans, but it feels like i'm losing myself in the process."
liliana shifted closer, setting the popcorn aside. "what do you mean? it's supposed to be fun, right?"
"it should be," olive replied, frustration bubbling to the surface. "but the way management treats me... it's suffocating. i feel like a puppet on strings, and it's driving me insane. i feel like a mad woman sometimes." she paused, her heart racing as she spoke. "they keep saying i'm 'crazy' for feeling this way, like i'm the problem. it's infuriating! i know i'm not losing it, but they keep trying to convince me that i am."
liliana's eyes widened, and she leaned in, her expression shifting to one of empathy. "that's ridiculous! you're not crazy for wanting to be treated with respect. it's not your fault they don't see how talented and amazing you are."
"i just wish someone else could see it too," olive replied, her voice trembling with emotion. "it feels like i'm screaming into a void. i'm surrounded by people who claim to support me, yet no one really sees how hard it is. i love the boys, but sometimes it feels like we're just a product to them, something to sell. and the media? they twist everything we say, making us look perfect when we're just... not."
olive's frustration washed over her like a wave, and she closed her eyes for a moment, trying to steady her breathing. "every day, i'm faced with headlines that don't reflect who i am or what i'm going through. it's like i'm in this bubble, and i can't break free."
liliana's brow furrowed in thought. "and what about zayn? what does he think about all of this?" she asked softly, her voice inviting olive to open up.
olive felt a mix of warmth and heaviness at the mention of his name. "zayn is... he's my anchor. he gets me like no one else ever has. whenever i feel overwhelmed, he's always there, reminding me i'm not crazy, that i'm not alone in this. but even he's struggling," she admitted, her voice softening. "he feels trapped too. sometimes, he wishes he could just be normal, you know? to relax without worrying about being in the spotlight all the time."
liliana's eyes filled with understanding. "that sounds so tough. he must feel the pressure just like you do."
"exactly," olive nodded, grateful for liliana's insight. "he wants to have private moments without cameras flashing, to just enjoy life without all the chaos surrounding us. we talk about it sometimes, how we both just want a break from everything. it's exhausting."
"wow, it sounds like you both really need that time together to just breathe," liliana said, her voice full of compassion. "it's not fair that you have to navigate all this pressure while trying to just be yourselves."
"i know! and it's hard not to feel guilty for wanting that," olive admitted, biting her lip. "i worry that the stress might push us apart. but then i remember how much we care for each other, and it gives me hope."
liliana reached out, placing a comforting hand on olive's shoulder. "you won't lose him. you're both in this together, and it's clear how much you care for each other. just don't let the madness around you cloud what you have. you deserve to be happy, especially with someone who understands you like zayn does."
olive felt a warmth spread through her chest at liliana's words. "i just wish it didn't have to be this way. i want to fight back, but sometimes i feel so small against all of it."
"you're stronger than you think, olive. you're not mad for wanting to be seen and treated with dignity," liliana reassured her, her tone firm yet nurturing. "you're brave for wanting to speak out and be heard. and remember, you're not alone in this fight. i'm here for you."
as the movie droned on, olive found comfort in her best friend's unwavering support. "thank you, lil. you always know how to lift me up," she said, a genuine smile breaking through her distress.
"always ol, that's what friends are for. you're not a mad woman" liliana replied, grinning back. "now, let's eat more popcorn and take a break from the world outside for a while. we'll figure this out together."
