As we all sat down at the table, I could feel Camilla's gaze zeroing in on me, and I braced myself. Matteo had just joined us, and I hoped maybe she'd keep to herself now that everyone was here.
But of course, that was wishful thinking.
"So, Sabrina," Camilla said, her tone casual but laced with something sharper, "I heard you've been spending time with Alejandro."
My head jerked up, and I caught her watching me with a smirk, her eyes glinting with some strange satisfaction.
How did she even know?
I felt a flicker of confusion and something else—why did she care?
I took a quick breath and looked away, choosing to ignore her. Maybe if I didn't engage, she'd let it drop. But, unsurprisingly, she didn't.
She leaned in, as if confiding a secret, but her words were anything but friendly. "Oh, don't be shy. It's cute, really, but you might want to be a bit more careful," she said, her voice thick with sarcasm. "Alejandro isn't exactly famous for his loyalty. He gets bored quickly. Always has."
I forced myself to keep calm, even as my stomach twisted. "Ale isn't like that. You don't know him," I said, trying to keep my voice steady.
Camilla's smirk deepened, and she glanced at Julian for a second, her eyes flickering with that same calculating glint.
She was enjoying this, and I had no idea why. "Oh, sweetie," she continued, voice dripping with mock sympathy, "that's what they all say. But it's not about knowing him, Sabrina—it's about knowing his type. And trust me, you're just a temporary... diversion."
Across the table, I could feel Matteo and Val exchanging glances, clearly aware of the tension. But Camilla didn't care; she was on a roll.
She looked me over slowly, as if sizing me up and finding me lacking. "Honestly, I get it," she continued, still staring at me with that smug smirk. "Girls like you always think you're special, that you're the exception. Alejandro probably tossed a few sweet words your way, and here you are, starry-eyed, thinking it means something."
She tilted her head, giving me a pitying look. "I mean, he's probably used to girls who put a bit more... effort into standing out, you know? Not the kind who just blend into the background."
Her words stung, and I felt my cheeks heating up, but I stayed quiet, not giving her the satisfaction of a reaction.
Camilla leaned back in her chair, crossing her arms with a triumphant smile. "But, hey, I'm sure there's someone out there who's into... the whole plain and predictable thing. I'd just hate for you to get your hopes up with Alejandro. It's only a matter of time before he moves on. He always does."
She tossed another glance Julian's way, a smirk playing on her lips as if to gauge his reaction. Julian's jaw was tight, his eyes narrowed at Camilla, but she didn't seem to care.
