The beeping of the heart monitor filled the air, a rhythmic reminder of the battle raging within Raven. Damian’s fingers trembled as he gripped her hand tighter, willing her to wake up. He felt as if the world was crumbling around him, each second stretching into an eternity. The tension in the room thickened as Dick quickly worked to stabilize the equipment, his brow furrowed in concentration.
“Damian, you need to let the machines do their job,” Dick said, his voice calm but firm. “You can’t help her by holding on like this.”
“No,” Damian replied, his voice strained. “I’m not leaving her. I can’t.” He could feel the warmth of her hand beneath his, a tether to the reality he was desperately clinging to. The memory of their argument, the way he had pushed her away, gnawed at him like a hungry beast. He couldn’t shake the guilt that wrapped around his heart, squeezing tighter with each passing moment.
Suddenly, the monitors began to stabilize, the chaotic beeping settling into a steady rhythm. Dick glanced at the readings, his eyes narrowing. “We’re getting her stabilized, but we need to keep monitoring her. The Lazarus Pit can have unpredictable effects.”
“Just do whatever it takes,” Damian insisted, unable to mask the urgency in his voice. “I won’t lose her again.” The words came out as a whisper, heavy with the weight of his fear and desperation.
As the seconds ticked by, Damian felt his heart race with hope. Raven’s chest began to rise and fall more steadily, the color slowly returning to her cheeks. He remained by her side, his eyes glued to her face, searching for any sign of life, any flicker of the girl he knew. “Raven,” he murmured, his voice a raw whisper. “Please, come back to me.”
Then, against all odds, her eyes fluttered open, revealing the vibrant purple he had missed so dearly. They met his gaze, a flicker of recognition lighting up her features. “Damian…” she breathed, her voice weak but filled with warmth. “What happened?”
“You were hurt,” he said, his voice trembling with emotion. “You… you died. I thought I lost you.” The admission hung heavily in the air, laden with the fear he had tried to suppress.
“I remember…” she murmured, her eyes clouding as the memories flooded back. “The mission… the warehouse… I couldn’t—”
“You don’t have to think about that now,” he interrupted, leaning closer, his heart pounding in his chest. “You’re safe. You’re here with me. That’s all that matters.”
Raven’s brow furrowed slightly, as if processing his words. “But how?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. “The Lazarus Pit… it’s dangerous. It can change you.”
“It doesn’t matter,” Damian insisted, his voice growing stronger, desperate to reassure her. “You’re back, and I’m here. I’ll take care of everything. Just focus on getting better.”
With each passing moment, the air around them began to shift, the weight of their earlier argument fading into the background. It was as if the very essence of their connection had deepened, solidified by the realization of what they had almost lost.
Raven’s gaze softened, her fingers squeezing his gently. “You came for me,” she said, a small, grateful smile appearing on her lips, even as pain flickered in her eyes. “You didn’t give up.”
“Never,” he replied, his voice fierce with conviction. “I won’t let you go again. I won’t let anything happen to you.”
A moment of silence settled between them, charged with unspoken words and shared emotions. But just as he thought they had found a fragile peace, Raven’s face twisted with pain. “Damian, my side… it hurts.”
