Emily's feet carried her toward Rachel's apartment, each step a declaration of independence. She knocked softly, the door swinging open to reveal Rachel's concerned face.
"Agent Black," Rachel said, ushering Emily inside.
The warmth of the apartment enveloped Emily, a stark contrast to the chill of the night. Rachel's gentle touch on her arm guided her to the couch.
"Tell me," Rachel coaxed, her eyes locked on Emily's.
Emily's words spilled out, a tangled mess of emotions. James' confession, his intensity, the suffocating weight of his obsession. Rachel listened, her expression a mask of calm, her eyes flashing with understanding.
When Emily finished, Rachel's grip on her hand tightened.
"You're safe now," Rachel promised.
Emily's eyes welled up with tears.
"I don't know what to do," Emily admitted.
Rachel's voice was steady.
"We'll figure it out together."
As Rachel pulled Emily into a hug, the tension began to seep from Emily's shoulders. For the first time since James' confession, Emily felt a glimmer of control.
