The days that followed marked the beginning of a transformation for Leila. She threw herself into understanding her powers, sparking an unspoken agreement between her and Lucian. He was her protector and her teacher now, and she was determined to prove that she was capable of defending herself in this strange world.
Each morning, Lucian would bring her to a secluded area of the estate—a lush, hidden garden surrounded by high stone walls covered in ivy. The garden provided them with privacy and a safe space where she could experiment without the prying eyes of the council or anyone else.

“Focus,” Lucian instructed one morning, his gaze steady on her. “Power without control is dangerous, both to yourself and others. I want you to feel the energy within you—imagine it as a current running through your veins. Start small and see if you can call it forth without moving.”
Leila closed her eyes, focusing inward. At first, it felt impossible. The energy within her was wild, like an untamed flame, and each time she tried to grasp it, it would slip through her mental fingers. But with each day of practice, she started to feel more connected to it.
One day, after hours of struggling, she finally felt a spark of success. As she reached within, a small, shimmering orb of light appeared above her hand, flickering like a tiny star. She opened her eyes, excitement shining in them as she looked at Lucian.
“Look! I did it!” she exclaimed, unable to contain her excitement.
A rare smile crossed Lucian’s face, his pride evident. “Well done, Leila. But remember—this is only the beginning.”
She watched as the orb faded, leaving her both exhilarated and exhausted. But with each new success, she found herself growing more confident. She could feel the shift within her; she was no longer just a visitor in this world but someone with a place in it.

On one of her training days, Leila and Lucian sat under a sprawling willow tree during a break. She watched him as he spoke, his gaze focused somewhere beyond the horizon.
“This world…” he began, his tone pensive. “It’s built on a delicate balance of power. The council enforces rules, but they aren’t infallible. Many of their decisions are influenced by fear—especially when it comes to someone like you.”
Leila frowned, brushing her hair back from her face. “Why? Because I’m from another realm?”
“Partly,” he said, glancing at her. “But more because of what you represent—a potential that’s neither fully human nor entirely of our kind. In their eyes, you’re an unknown factor. And for those in power, the unknown is dangerous.”
Leila nodded thoughtfully, understanding now why Lucian had been so adamant about protecting her. “I won’t let them control me, Lucian. I may not know everything about this power, but I’ll learn. I’ll find my own way.”
He looked at her, a faint trace of admiration in his gaze. “I have no doubt that you will.”

That evening, Leila returned to her chambers with a renewed sense of purpose. But as she entered, she noticed something strange—a letter on her desk, sealed with a deep crimson wax. She hadn’t seen anyone come into her room, nor had she given anyone permission to enter.
Curiosity piqued, she broke the seal and unfolded the letter, her brow furrowing as she read.
“Leila of Earth, Be careful whom you trust. Not all those who smile have your best interests at heart. A Friend.”
