The night air was still as Leila and Lucian approached the ancient gateway said to lead to the realm “between worlds.” It stood at the edge of the forest, hidden deep within a grove of ancient trees. The gateway itself was simple—two stone pillars, weathered by time and etched with symbols that shimmered faintly in the moonlight.
Lucian held the ancient text in one hand, his other hand reaching for hers as he looked at her. “Once we cross through, there’s no telling what we’ll find. This realm is rumored to distort reality, and it’s possible we may face illusions… or worse.”
Leila nodded, her fingers tightening around his. “I’m ready. Whatever’s on the other side, we’ll face it together.”
With a nod, Lucian began reciting the incantation from the ancient text. The air around them grew charged, a low hum filling the grove as the symbols on the pillars began to glow. The space between the pillars shimmered, distorting as a portal slowly opened, revealing a swirling, misty void beyond.
Together, they stepped through.

The moment they entered the realm between worlds, a strange sensation washed over Leila, like being submerged in cold water. The mist swirled around them, thick and disorienting, and the landscape seemed to shift with each step they took. It was a world of shadows and half-formed shapes, where reality seemed to bend and twist.
Lucian stayed close, his hand never leaving hers as they moved cautiously forward. “This place is unlike anything I’ve ever seen,” he murmured, his gaze scanning their surroundings. “It feels… alive, as if it’s watching us.”
Leila nodded, shivering as she felt an invisible weight pressing down on them. “I think it’s testing us. This realm… it wants to know if we’re worthy of reaching the Shard.”
As they continued, strange images began to appear in the mist—scenes from their memories, moments of pain and doubt. Leila saw flashes of her life on Earth, her family and friends, the longing she still felt for them. She heard echoes of her mother’s voice, calling her name, and for a brief moment, she was overwhelmed by a wave of homesickness.
“Leila.” Lucian’s voice was steady, grounding her as he squeezed her hand. “It’s trying to distract us. Focus on why we’re here.”
She took a deep breath, the weight of her emotions slowly dissipating as she focused on Lucian’s presence beside her. “Thank you,” she whispered, feeling a surge of gratitude.
They pressed on, navigating through the shifting mist until they reached a clearing where the air felt heavier, more charged. In the center of the clearing stood a pedestal, and upon it rested the Shard of Eternity. The shard was a crystalline fragment, glowing with an ethereal light that pulsed in sync with her heartbeat.
As they approached, Lucian’s grip on her hand tightened. “Be cautious. The legends say the shard is powerful, but it may also be… unpredictable.”
Leila nodded, her gaze fixed on the shard as she felt an overwhelming sense of awe and trepidation. She reached out slowly, her fingers brushing against its surface. The moment she made contact, a surge of energy shot through her, filling her with a sensation both familiar and foreign.
She saw flashes of worlds, realms beyond her own, glimpses of people and places she had never known. And in that instant, she understood—this shard held the power to connect realms, to bridge worlds. It was the source of Daelan’s ambitions, the key he needed to fulfill his plans.
But it was also a link back to her world.
“Leila?” Lucian’s voice was soft, filled with concern. “What do you see?”
She turned to him, her eyes wide with realization. “The shard… it can take me back. I could return to my world, even if only for a brief time.”
Lucian’s expression softened, understanding dawning in his eyes. “Then you have a choice to make.”
She felt the weight of the decision settle over her. She could use the shard to return, to see her family and friends, even if just for a moment. But doing so could risk the stability of the realms, and it would delay their mission to keep the shard from Daelan.
As she hesitated, Lucian placed a hand on her shoulder, his voice gentle. “Whatever you choose, Leila, I’ll support you. You deserve to find peace, whether that’s here or in your own world.”
A tear slipped down her cheek as she looked at him, feeling the depth of her connection to both him and the kingdom. She wanted to see her family, to reassure them that she was safe, but she couldn’t turn her back on the realm she had come to love.
Finally, she took a deep breath, steeling herself. “I need to go back. Just for a moment, to tell them I’m okay. Then I’ll return, and we’ll stop Daelan together.”
Lucian nodded, his gaze filled with unwavering support. “Then we’ll make it happen.”
---
Leila focused on the shard, willing it to transport her to Earth. The mist around her thickened, swirling as a familiar sensation washed over her. She felt the world shift, and when she opened her eyes, she was standing in her childhood home. Her family’s voices echoed from the next room, and her heart ached with a mixture of joy and sorrow.
“Mom?” she called out, her voice trembling.
Her mother appeared in the doorway, her eyes widening as she saw Leila standing there. “Leila?” she whispered, disbelief mingling with relief. “Is it really you?”
Leila nodded, tears streaming down her face as she embraced her mother. “Yes, it’s me. I’m safe. I’m… I’m in another world, but I’m okay. I needed you to know that.”
Her mother held her tightly, her voice choked with emotion. “We were so worried… We thought we’d lost you.”
Leila pulled back, looking into her mother’s eyes. “I can’t stay, Mom. But please tell everyone that I’m alright, that I’m happy. I’ve found a new purpose… and someone who means a lot to me.”
Her mother nodded, tears glistening in her eyes. “I understand. Just… be safe, Leila. And know that we love you.”
Leila felt herself being pulled back, the shard’s energy beginning to wane. She gave her mother a final, tearful smile. “I love you, too. Goodbye… for now.”
And then, in a swirl of mist, she was gone.

When Leila returned to the realm between worlds, Lucian was waiting for her, his expression filled with relief. She met his gaze, her heart still aching from the brief reunion, but also filled with a renewed sense of purpose.
“Did you find peace?” he asked softly, his hand reaching for hers.
She nodded, a small, grateful smile on her lips. “Yes. And now, I’m ready to face whatever comes next.”
Together, they left the realm between worlds, the Shard of Eternity secured in Lucian’s satchel. They knew that Daelan would stop at nothing to claim the shard, but Leila felt stronger than ever, fortified by the love and support of both worlds.
With Lucian by her side, she was ready to protect this realm, no matter the cost.
