The days following the council meeting were filled with tension. Despite Lucian’s assurances, Leila couldn’t shake the feeling that her presence in his world had triggered something she couldn’t fully comprehend. She knew there was no going back to the life she once knew, but her role here remained uncertain.
Lucian was busier than ever, working with his trusted advisors to handle the fallout of the recent attack and navigate the delicate politics with the council. Though he checked in on her frequently, Leila sensed the strain weighing on him, his responsibilities pulling him in every direction.
One evening, while she was in the library reviewing scrolls Lucian had lent her, a servant entered with a letter, sealed with a faintly shimmering mark she didn’t recognize.
“Lady Leila,” the servant said, bowing, “this letter arrived for you. It… appears to be from your world.”
Her heart skipped a beat as she took the letter, the weight of it heavy in her hands. She opened the seal and began to read, her hands trembling as the words sank in. It was from a friend back on Earth—someone she hadn’t thought she’d hear from again. The message was simple, an update on life without her: family gatherings, birthdays, her absence deeply felt by those she had left behind.
The reality hit her with sudden force. Despite the life she was building here, her old world hadn’t disappeared. Her friends and family were living on, likely wondering what had happened to her. The letter was a reminder of the life she had left behind, and for the first time in weeks, she felt the pull of home.
She was still holding the letter when Lucian entered the library. His gaze shifted from her face to the letter in her hands, his expression tightening. “Leila? Is everything alright?”
She nodded, though her voice faltered. “I… received a letter. From my world.”
Lucian’s jaw clenched, but he maintained his composure. “And what does it say?”
She took a deep breath, trying to find the words. “It’s from a friend. They’re… they’re worried. My family and friends, they don’t know where I am. To them, I’ve vanished without explanation.”
Lucian’s face softened, a hint of sorrow in his eyes. “I understand. It’s not easy to leave behind a life, a family. And you didn’t choose to be here.”
“No,” she replied, her voice barely a whisper. “I didn’t. But now that I am… I feel torn. Part of me wants to go back, to reassure them, to explain. But the other part… I can’t imagine leaving this world. Or leaving you.”
They stood in silence, the weight of her words filling the air between them. Lucian’s gaze held an intensity that made her heart ache, his feelings for her unspoken but unmistakable.
“Leila,” he began, his voice low and steady, “I would never ask you to stay if your heart lies elsewhere. But know that… if you choose to remain here, you will have a place in this world. With me.”
Her pulse quickened, and she looked away, gathering her thoughts. “Do you think… if I were to go back, would there be a way to return?”
He hesitated, and she could see the struggle in his eyes. “Travel between worlds is rare and unpredictable. I can’t guarantee that once you leave, you would be able to return.”
The reality of his words sank in, and she felt her heart breaking at the choice she faced. If she went back, she would be abandoning everything she had come to love in this world. But if she stayed, she would be leaving behind a life, family, and friends who didn’t understand why she had disappeared.
Lucian took a step closer, his hand reaching for hers. His touch was warm, grounding her in the moment. “Leila, whatever you choose, know that I am grateful for the time we’ve shared. You have brought light to this place, and to me.”
The depth of emotion in his gaze made her chest tighten, and she realized that her feelings for him had grown beyond what she could easily leave behind. She wanted to be a part of his world, to stand by him, no matter the challenges they faced.
But there was still a part of her that yearned for home.
“Lucian,” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion, “I don’t want to leave. I want to stay here, with you. But… I can’t abandon my family without a word. They deserve to know that I’m safe.”
Lucian’s expression softened, understanding and sorrow mingling in his gaze. “Then we’ll find a way. Perhaps… there is a chance, a way for you to go back briefly. To say goodbye.”
She looked up at him, hope flickering in her eyes. “Is that possible?”
“There are ancient texts, rituals that may allow brief passage between worlds. It’s dangerous and uncertain, but if it’s what you need, I’ll help you.”
Overwhelmed by gratitude, she wrapped her arms around him, her voice barely a whisper. “Thank you, Lucian. For everything.”
He held her close, his embrace warm and steady, a silent promise of the bond they shared. And in that moment, Leila knew that whatever choice she made, Lucian would be there to support her. They stood together in silence, bound by the knowledge that, despite the uncertainties, they would face the future together—no matter where it led.
