The days blurred together, each one sinking into the next, and with every passing morning, my hope eroded a little more. Each dawn began the same - waking up with the faint remnants of warmth from that night lingering like smoke. But the feelings that had once made my heart race, that had set my skin alive, now weighed me down. I carried them like a secret only I could remember because for Theo and Mattheo, that night had apparently dissolved into nothingness.
At first, I still told myself I was imagining things. That maybe they were still playing their game, and they’d turn up at any moment with the sly smile, drawing me into another whispered conversation, another secret touch, ankther promise. But as the days wore on, I was left to wrestle with a new, crushing silence.
I’d find myself walking into the Great Hall, hopeful, scanning the room. Maybe today… maybe today. But nothing. Not even a glance. Theo and Mattheo would sit there, talking with Draco or laughing with Blaise, entirely immersed in their own world. A world that no longer included me. A world that never included me.
Each day without a sign felt like a small betrayal. I’d feel my chest tighten, my heart flutter in desperate anticipation when I saw Mattheo’s head tilt, only to realize he was looking at someone else, speaking to someone else. A girl across the table would laugh at something Theo said, her laughter ringing loud in my ears. I’d look down at my plate, forcing myself to breathe, forcing myself to ignore the hollow ache that threatened to swallow me whole.
Every morning, I’d sit down with Kai and Avery, plastering on a smile that felt more strained with each passing day. They didn’t seem to notice. Or if they did, they were kind enough to pretend they didn’t. We’d talk about classes, about exams, about the latest gossip. But no matter what we discussed, my mind would drift back to these boys. It was pathetic, really - how they consumed me, how every fiber of my being seemed attuned to their presence, only for them to look right through me.
My stomach churned every time I spotted them together in the corridors, laughing and talking as if I didn’t exist. Theo’s dark hair would catch the light, or Mattheo would run a hand through his curls, and I’d feel that same pull, that magnetic force that had drawn me to them that night. But now, it was a cruel reminder of everything I couldn’t have. I’d hear their laughter echo down the hall as I passed by, my heart throbbing painfully in my chest, the ache growing deeper with each sound that wasn’t meant for me.
I’d linger sometimes, hanging back in the shadows, my gaze following them down the corridor until they vanished from view. And every single time, I’d feel the sting of rejection a little sharper, a little colder.
As the days turned into weeks, the hope I’d clung to so desperately began to fade. I’d told myself it was just a game, that they were building up tension, making me ache for their attention. But with each day that passed, that excuse felt more and more like a lie. They’d gotten what they wanted, and now they’d moved on, like I was nothing more than a forgotten note in a song that had lost its melody.
...
One evening, as the dimming light of dusk filtered through the library windows, I found myself curled up in a secluded corner, my fingers gripping the edge of a book I hadn’t read a single word of. It had become a habit by now. The silence was heavy, pressing down on me, and for the first time, I couldn’t hold back the tears that burned in my eyes. I bit down on my lip, blinking rapidly, trying to keep them at bay, but the ache in my chest had grown too strong, too unbearable.
Why did it have to hurt so much? Why did I have to feel this way - like I was breaking apart, like I was losing pieces of myself? I’d never wanted anything serious, just a bit of fun, a thrill to make life here feel less mundane. But they’d gone deeper, found a part of me I hadn’t even known was there, and now they’d left it raw, exposed.
