"laniii! are you ready? your aunt is outside!" , my mom said all giddy , standing at my bedroom door
hey, i'm mei'lani. but people call me lani. i live in north carolina as of right now , i just graduated high school.
i planned on going to ncat (my dream school) , but my aunt thought it was a good idea to grant me a scholarship at clark atlanta university , in georgia , to come be a basketball manager for her team.
my mom only thinking about free school, thought it was a good idea. i really don't want to go, but whatever.
i sighed as i got up and gathered my things before heading downstairs to get in my aunt's car
"i'm gonna miss you so much" , my mom said hugging me. "i'll come visit soon" , she said giving me a kiss on my forehead
"see you later mom" , i chuckled. my mom is so clingy with me , i knew she'd call before i even got there
"you ready kiddo?" my aunt asked coming from the bathroom , heading outside
i followed her to her car, threw my bags in the trunk, got in the front seat and put on my beats.
she said her goodbyes to my mom and got in the car as well.
i rolled down the window to wave back to my mom. i'm gonna miss her.

"i love you more babyy" , kamari said before hanging up on her boyfriend. i looked at her with my face all scrunched up
"best friend don't start that hating shit" , she said looking over at me
"ain't nobody hating on you and that ugly ass boy" , i said turning my nose up at her
"whatever"
"thanks for the ride best, i'll see you in class tomorrow" , i said taking off my seatbelt
"okay boo, goodnight!" , she said unlocking the doors
she waited for me to get inside before pulling off. i took my shoes off and tried to hurry upstairs , seeing my mom in the kitchen.
just as i got to the stairs , "unt uh, come do these dishes girl" , i heard my mom say as she drug her feet across the wooden floors
i turned around and seen her walk up to me, "i didn't make them.."
"you also don't pay the bills, now do you?" , she questioned me
i just sighed and made my way to the kitchen.
my mom was a bitch, respectfully. she didn't like me cause i 'reminded her of my dad'. idk if it's because im more masculine or what.
but the older i get , the more she acts as if she hates me. i just deal with it. i've been saving the money from my clothing brand so i can actually get my own home or apartment. and i'm almost at my goal.

the next day
my teammates and i jogged to the bleachers and automatically grabbed our waters.
with all of our chests heaving up and down , coach stands in front of us , holding this random girl's hand
"okay girls. this is mei'lani, my niece. she's here on scholarship to be y'all's manager , since yall last one was shitty. she's gonna be helping us out so respect her as if she's me." , she stated to the team
i drunk my water and let my eyes explore her. she was pretty , but i fanned that off.
my teammates began to congregate around her , and introduce themselves. i just continued to try and catch my breath while drinking my water
coach then blew her whistle , "free throws! grab your partners" , she ordered
i was shooting free throws with my teammate, bri, as i saw her walk behind the goal to exit the gym.
she came back shortly with a bag of ice, eating the ice. i furrowed my eyebrows then refocused on shooting my free throw.
