As Charlie started to play on the living room floor, her laughter filled the air, a sweet melody that contrasted sharply with the tension that had settled over the household. Arabelle sat nearby, absorbed in a sketchbook, drawing fantastical creatures inspired by the tales their mother had told them. Kee Kee, the small one-eyed cat, prowled around the room, her playful nature always on full display.

“Look, Arabelle! Kee Kee is pretending to be a monster!” Charlie giggled, her bright eyes following the cat as she stalked playfully through the low sunlight, her fur glinting like tiny stars.

Kee Kee, sensing Charlie’s attention, suddenly sprang forward, pouncing toward a stray piece of string that dangled from a nearby toy. In the excitement, she miscalculated her leap and landed awkwardly beside Charlie, who was still engrossed in her game.

“Oh! Kee Kee!” Charlie squealed, reaching out to pet her. But Kee Kee, startled by the sudden movement, turned quickly and swiped her paw in instinctive defense. Her tiny claws grazed Charlie’s arm, leaving a small scratch.

Charlie gasped, pulling her hand back and staring at the tiny red mark forming on her skin. It didn’t hurt too much, but the surprise of it caught her off guard.

Arabelle looked up from her drawing, immediately concerned. “Charlie, are you okay?” She rushed over, setting the sketchbook aside

“I’m fine!” Charlie said, a mix of surprise and disappointment in her voice as she examined the scratch. “Kee Kee just scared me, that’s all.”

Arabelle knelt down beside her, inspecting the scratch closely. “It’s just a little scratch. You’ll be okay. Just give it a minute.”

Charlie nodded, her eyes still wide. “I just wanted to play with her!” She glanced at Kee Kee, who had resumed her playful demeanor, now chasing a dust mote in the sunlight as if nothing had happened.

Arabelle couldn’t help but chuckle. “Maybe give her a little space for now? She’s a bit of a diva.”

“Yeah,” Charlie agreed, rubbing her arm lightly.

The two sisters shared a laugh, and Charlie’s mood quickly lifted as they turned their attention back to their games, finding comfort in each other’s company. Kee Kee, oblivious to the chaos she'd caused, continued her antics, providing the perfect distraction as the sunlight warmed the room around them.
