The Normandy Mark II emerged from the Mass Effect relay, gracefully entering the Eden Prime system. Its dark silhouette sliced through the quiet of space, an emblem of the Imperium’s power and purpose. Joker’s voice crackled over the comms, filled with his signature smugness. “Arrival confirmed. Smooth as silk—just like I promised.”

At the helm, Nihilus Kryik, the Turian Spectre assigned by the Citadel Council, gave an approving nod. “Good work, Joker. Captain Anderson will be pleased.” Though bound to the Council, Nihilus shared an unbreakable bond with the ship’s commanding officer, Lord Commander Shepard, forged in the hellfire of the Second Imperial-Batarian War. It was a rare friendship, tempered by battles both had barely survived.

Leaving the cockpit, Nihilus moved toward the bridge, just as Shepard stepped in, a towering figure in the regal crimson and gold armor of the Astral Knights, the Imperium’s elite Space Marine Legion under his command. Beside him was Tali’Zorah, his beloved and skilled Quarian engineer, her eyes shining behind her mask as she took in the distant view of Eden Prime.

Joker and Lieutenant Kaidan Alenko snapped to attention at Shepard’s arrival. Joker, seated as always due to his brittle bone condition, offered a casual salute, while Kaidan held a more formal stance. Shepard returned the salute with a nod. “At ease, both of you.” He glanced at the distant planet, then at Joker. “Take us in close to Eden Prime, nice and quiet.”

Joker’s fingers flew over the controls as he maneuvered the ship toward the planet. But before they could get closer, Captain Anderson’s voice came over the intercom, a commanding yet steady presence. “Shepard, you and Tali are needed in the briefing room. We have a situation.”

As they made their way through the Normandy’s labyrinthine corridors, Shepard’s gaze met Tali’s. They exchanged a brief smile, a silent understanding between them. Despite the weight of his duties as Lord Commander and Primarch, Tali was a constant source of warmth and clarity for him—his anchor amid the storms.

In the briefing room, Nihilus was waiting, his expression carefully controlled. He nodded at Shepard as they clasped forearms in a warrior’s greeting. “Thanks for coming, Shepard,” Nihilus said with the respect and familiarity of a close ally.

“Anything for a friend,” Shepard replied, his voice resonating with both duty and camaraderie.

Captain Anderson soon joined them, his expression severe. Without wasting any time, he gestured to Joker, who patched a video feed onto the main screen. “We just received this distress call from Eden Prime,” Anderson explained.

The footage displayed utter chaos. Soldiers of the Astra Militarum were entrenched, battling grotesque mechanical creatures with gaunt, metallic frames and glowing, lifeless eyes. Their bodies were twisted, as if they’d been pieced together from the remains of the fallen, now weaponized. The soldiers shouted frantically for reinforcements as they held the line, only for the camera to shift, capturing the descent of an enormous mechanical hand reaching down from the dark clouds above. The screen abruptly cut to static.

Shepard’s jaw clenched. “Looks like the Astra Militarum is facing something big. This is more than a skirmish.”

Tali placed a hand on Shepard’s armored forearm, her voice quiet but sure. “Shepard, I’ve never seen anything like that. Whatever these things are, they’re beyond even Prothean tech. It’s as if… as if they’re a perverse imitation of life itself.”

Anderson’s gaze hardened. “Shepard, gather your team. We’re deploying to Eden Prime immediately. The beacon is our top priority, but if you can save any civilians, do so.”

Shepard nodded, feeling the weight of responsibility settle on his shoulders. Briefing Chief Gunnery Officer Ashley Williams and Major Kaidan Alenko, he informed them of the hostile threat and their mission’s critical nature. Though he held rank as Primarch, Shepard respected Anderson’s field expertise, deferring to his strategic wisdom in complex engagements.

In the hangar bay, Anderson delivered final orders as Shepard strapped on his weapons, feeling Tali’s reassuring presence at his side. Anderson’s voice was firm. “Remember, that beacon could be key to understanding what’s attacking Eden Prime. Prioritize it above all else.”

Nihilus was set to deploy as an advance scout, his talents essential in gauging enemy movement and sending back intel. “I’ll give you a full report as soon as I touch down,” he promised, offering Shepard a rare, genuine smile before turning to the exit ramp.

Finally, they reached drop zone two. Shepard exchanged a brief, meaningful look with Tali, her trust in him evident even through her visor. Taking one last moment, he nodded to Captain Anderson, then led the charge, diving from the Normandy with Kaidan and Ashley following.

This mission, unknown to them all, would ignite a chain reaction that would shake the Imperium, the Council, and the galaxy to its core.
