Lord Commander Jack Shepherd stood alone at the communications console on the bridge, his hands gripping the edge tightly as he awaited a connection. The devastation on Eden Prime still haunted him, and he could feel the weight of the message he was about to deliver. The screen flickered to life, and the face of the Emperor — his father — appeared, regal and stern, framed by the flickering blue of the transmission.
"My son, I wasn't expecting to hear from you so soon. has something happened?" the emperor asked not really sure why his son would contact him on such a simple mission.
Jack straightened, his voice unwavering as he recounted the events on Eden Prime. He described the Reapers, ancient, unfeeling machines with a capacity for destruction beyond any threat the Imperium had ever faced. His father’s eyes sharpened as Jack detailed the enemy’s capabilities, the sheer annihilation they could unleash.
When he was done, the Emperor was silent, his gaze darkening as the gravity of the situation sank in. “So, it has begun,” he said slowly, almost to himself. Then his eyes met Jack’s, filled with a quiet resolve. “We have prepared for this, Jack. The Imperium exists for moments like these.”
The Emperor’s voice grew stronger, more decisive. “I am ordering a full mobilization. Every fleet, every soldier, every resource. This is a threat we must face united.” Jack felt his father’s words settle into him, the enormity of the call to arms resonating through his core.
The Emperor continued, “I will contact Udina on the Citadel. The Council will be informed of the Imperium’s mobilization before you arrive. It’s up to you to make them understand, Jack.”
The screen blinked off, leaving Jack alone in the dim light of the console. The Emperor had spoken, and now, the Imperium would stand as one against this threat. Jack took a moment to breathe in the silence, the responsibility settling over him, before he turned and left the bridge.
Back in his quarters, Jack sat at his desk, bathed in the soft glow of his terminal as he worked on his report for the Council. He had rewritten it countless times, carefully crafting each word to convey the full scope of the Reaper threat. The Council needed to see that this wasn’t just another skirmish; it was the survival of the galaxy itself.
A soft knock at his door pulled him from his thoughts. He looked up, momentarily surprised by the interruption. “Enter,” he called, and the door slid open to reveal Tali. The sight of her brought an immediate warmth to his face. She stepped in, her expression one of quiet concern.
“You’re still working?” she asked, her voice gentle but insistent. “You’ve barely rested since Eden Prime. You can’t keep pushing yourself like this, Jack.”
Jack tried to brush it off with a small smile. “This report has to be perfect. If the Council doesn’t understand the threat, everything we’re doing could be in vain.”
Tali’s head tilted, a fond smile crossing her face. “And what good will that report be if you’re too exhausted to even deliver it? You were knocked out on Eden Prime, remember? You can’t keep going like nothing happened.”
He wanted to argue, to say he was fine, but the warmth in her gaze broke through his defenses. With a sigh, he nodded, a quiet chuckle escaping him. “Alright, you win.”
As he stood, she laughed softly, victory in her eyes. He went to change into something more comfortable, feeling a strange sense of relief in the simplicity of the moment. When he returned, she was still there, waiting patiently.
“Alright, Lord Commander,” she teased, “time to listen to orders.”
He rolled his eyes, a smile breaking through. He lay down on his bed, and to his surprise, Tali moved closer, settling beside him and resting her head on his shoulder. He felt his heart quicken at the intimacy, still unused to these quiet moments. Slowly, he let his arm encircle her, drawing her close as they lay in the soft, peaceful silence.
As his eyes began to close, though, the peace shattered. A torrent of visions swept over him. He saw Eden Prime again, the Reapers’ shadow stretching across its burning landscape. But then, the vision shifted — to a battlefield drenched in fire, a massive rebellion tearing through the stars. And there, at the heart of the uprising, was a figure clad in black armor, her face obscured but unmistakable: his sister, leading the charge with unrelenting fury.
The visions blurred, the rebellion and the Reaper invasion melding into one, until he could barely breathe beneath the weight of it. Just as he thought he might be lost, the nightmare faded, leaving him gasping. He blinked, feeling Tali’s hand in his, her presence anchoring him.
He steadied his breathing, feeling the tension ebb away in her warmth. Slowly, he let his eyes close again, letting himself find peace in her embrace as he drifted into a true rest. The Imperium was mobilizing, and he would be ready. But for now, in this brief, quiet moment, he allowed himself to simply be Jack Shepherd.
