I found myself strolling down the sterile hospital hallway, my heart set on finding Kai. However, a faint sound stopped me in my tracks—a soft, intermittent crying emanating from Kiki's patient room. Curiosity piqued, I backed up slightly and peeked inside to check if everything was okay. My gaze landed on Kiki, her face streaked with tears, as she clung to her patient with desperate need.
"It's okay. Don't cry," her patient reassured her, his features calm and serene as he gently patted her back with an understanding expression. I raised my eyebrows in surprise, momentarily stifling a giggle with my hand over my mouth. The patient continued, "Meeting and partings are normal. Good luck on becoming a fine nurse, sir." Kiki pulled away, her expression suddenly blank.
"It's Miss," she corrected, wiping the tears from her cheeks.
"Ah, yes. Sorry. Miss," he responded sheepishly, a hint of a smile breaking his somber demeanor.
I quietly exited the room and resumed my mission to find Kai. My footsteps echoed softly on the linoleum floor until I heard the unmistakable sounds of three men sobbing. At the far end of the room, Macey stood awkwardly beside a bed, her hands clasped tightly in front of her, her discomfort evident on her face as if she were caught in an unwanted situation.
"Thank you, Macey!" one of the men exclaimed, adjusting his large glasses, his bowl cut swaying slightly as he spoke. "From now on, we are going to support you."
Macey lowered her gaze, a visible tension in her posture as she extended her hand toward them, signaling for them to stop their lamentations. "Sorry," she began, her voice laced with sharp determination as she lifted her eyes, piercing into them. "Please do me a favor and forget me." With that, she turned and left the room.
Our eyes met briefly, and I could see her silent exasperation as she rolled her eyes. I had to cover my mouth to suppress a laugh as I continued my walk down the hallway. I decided to check on Sunny, hoping for a lighter mood.
As I entered her room, a wave of warmth washed over me. Sunny was beaming, her hands clasped together in front of her, radiating positivity despite the circumstances. Her patient, however, was barely recognizable beneath layers of white bandages, which wrapped around him like a cocoon.
"Thanks to you, I got all better," he stated, though he didn't meet her gaze, a thick bandage covering his face. "I'm over here," Sunny replied brightly, trying to draw his attention.
He strained to look in her direction, frustration etched in his tone as he murmured, "I'm so pitiful."
"That's okay," Sunny said reassuringly, her hands gently grasping his shoulders, coaxing him to face her.
"Rather than that, why don't you show me your wounds again as a last memory?" Her voice dropped to a low, haunting tone. I felt a chill run down my spine as she suddenly jerked his head, preparing to peel back the bandages.
In a panic, I hastily left the room and quickened my pace down the hallway. Sunny was truly something else.
As I rounded the corner, I caught sight of Kai kneeling next to Sweetheart, who appeared to be in tears. The sight pulled at my heartstrings; Kai looked so tender and concerned.
"Today is our last day, Jinji," Kai said, his smile tinged with sadness.
"Up until now, thank you," his voice was soft, filled with genuine care.
Sweetheart took a small, shuddering breath, glancing away from him, her tears glistening.
"What's wrong? Are you feeling sick?" Kai inquired, his expression shifting to one of worry, concern etched on his brow.
