chapter 004

When Rowan and Hope finally climbed out of the water, his face suddenly turned serious, "Listen, Hope there are some things you need know before going to school on Monday," Hope raised her brows, "My family doesn't know about you and I want to keep it that way. So we can't talk in school."

"Why?"

He paused for a minute, "They . . . it's complicated. My brother Edward and my brother Jesper, will most likely look at you as a threat. In an effort to avoid world war brother, it's best they don't know you're supernatural."

Hope understood that. It was easier this way. She had no wanting to be stuck in the middle of a family fend. How many times had her family tried to kill their parents again?

"Do you remember how you promised to teach me magic," Hope nodded, "I need us to do one of those lessons now."

Hope looked down at her wet body, "Um-"

"You can't go to school without this."

Normally Rowan's face was a mix of curiosity and cunning, but now it was filled with intense determination.

"What do we need to do?" The tribrid asked.

"My family and I are not just vampires. Some of us have special abilities. Specially my brother Edward has the ability to read minds. He doesn't have to touch you or even start a conversation with you - all you have to do is be in the same room as him. I had yet to see you in school until yesterday which means he probably hadn't either, which is good. He cannot read your mind. He . . . will be a lot less gentle than I was."

Hope scoffed at that one, there was nothing gentle about Rowan. The dent left in the tree he shoved her into proved that.

"He's violent?"

"Protective and very on edge at the moment," he gave her a very serious look, "I fully intend to keep my side of the bargain, but it is imperative that my family doesn't find out."

Vampires that can read minds that easily? Now Hope had really seen everything, and it meant she had to be all the more careful.

"I need you to put some kind of cloaking spell on yourself," he continued, "make it so he can read your mind, but doesn't get anything important. And most importantly avoid him at all costs. I will divert him, but you need the cloaking spell for extra protection."

"I don't know, Rowan, a spell like that could take days."

"So be it, but you can't come to school until then."

Hope thought about arguing, but she figured it would be a lost cause. Instead she simply scoffed and said, "I guess I better get started."

However, there was another part of his story that interested the tribrid, "How won't Edward read your mind?"
