You woke up the next morning after a good night’s rest. You checked your phone. Two new messages from Maddie at 3:28 a.m.
This girl never sleeps, you thought.
Maddie: I talked poetry with an owl last night.
Maddie: So, did you like Polyphia?
Me: It's really cool, both fast and slow, like breakdancing mixed with a slow dance. I added the band to my playlist. (Can’t you ever sleep at night?)
Maddie: You forget I'm half feline, my little siren...
Me: Ah ah, I might believe you one day.
You had tried to tell Madison about your secret in the past, but Madison had responded jokingly :
"Sure, and I’m half cat!"
Since then, you two jokingly referred to each other that way.
You spent the rest of the day replying to comments and reading stories on Wattpad. Your editor had informed you in the afternoon that no new subjects would be coming for at least three weeks because the next subject would exclusively cover the jungle.
All this free time also allowed you to discover that Polyphia’s music was just as enjoyable as background music.
The next morning, you woke up early and went out to your balcony, as usual, to enjoy the first rays of the sun. From there, you had a direct view of the beach and ocean.
Next to the beach, right beside the cliff, there was a house that looked like a mountain chalet, yet somehow fit into the scenery.
You noticed, however, that a black minibus was parked outside, which was rare, as locals preferred to park their vehicles in the municipal lot, two hundred meters from the beach.
With still nothing better to do, you decided to go swimming once again. You thought you’d check out the cliffside of the beach, where you hadn’t been in a while.
You headed to the beach and, after making your tail appear, set off for the reefs along the cliff.
The many rocks scattered around the area seemed to be polished by water and time, their forms so finely carved that one could imagine an Impressionist sculptor had come to shape the limestone as they pleased.
You spent more than an hour exploring the nooks and crannies of these stones, then after swimming through most of the reef’s spots, you headed back toward the town side of the beach, finally returning to dry land.
After drying off, you sat on the beach, gazing at the ocean, when a man called out to you. He was quite tall, with long, smooth chestnut hair, almost blonde, a very thin beard, and a shy demeanor despite a childlike smile. He looked to be between 20 and 25 years old.
- "Uh, hello," he began. "Sorry to bother you, but could you show me where the grocery store is?"
- "You’re not from around here, I assume?" you replied.
- "No, actually, we arrived yesterday with my friends. We're renting my cousin’s house, the one at the end of the beach, by the cliff."
- "Well, come on, I’ll show you. I need to do some shopping too," you said, getting up. "What’s your name?"
- "Uh, LePage... I mean, Scott," the man answered, shaking the hand you offered.
(so goofy but cute at the same time 🤗)
As you walked, you told Scott about the town. After a while, Scott asked a question he’d clearly been wanting to ask for some time:
- "(y/n), do you believe in sirens?"
Surprised, you responded with slight apprehension, though it didn’t show in your voice:
- "Uh, yes, why do you ask?"
- "Well, you see, I love scuba diving. So, I took advantage of the location and went diving this morning. I went to check out the coral at the reefs in front of the house, and I’m sure I saw a siren’s silhouette in the distance, near the cliffs. It was clearly a human body on a tail."
Crap, crap, crap, you thought.
- "Wow! You’re lucky!" you exclaimed.
I won’t be going swimming there while he’s around, you thought.
- "I’ve lived here for four years and have never seen one," you added.
- "The problem is, my friends think I imagined it—they don’t believe me."
Good, you thought.
- "That’s a shame," you replied.
After finishing your shopping, Scott invited you to join him and his friends for lunch.
- "Don’t worry, they’re nice, and two of them are good cooks. Sadly, I’m not one of them."
It was the promise of great food that convinced you.
- "Well... okay. It’s good to get to know your neighbors, after all."
You said that last part realizing that since moving here, you had met very few people.
You observed Scott for a moment as he walked ahead of you. He wasn’t looking for anything; he was genuinely courteous, funny, and kind, and treated you like a big brother. His company wasn’t unpleasant at all.
But he saw me, you thought. I’ll have to be very discreet.
Soon, they crossed the beach and reached the house.
(why is he so damn hot, that should be illegal 😍)

Sooooo yeah, apparently I divide my stories like sh!t so the epic meeting moment is delayed, 🙁
