The sun began to set over the town, casting a warm orange glow across the streets as decorations fluttered in the cool autumn breeze. Houses were decked out in cobwebs, pumpkins, and eerie lights, while the scent of caramel apples and roasted marshmallows filled the air. But in Riland's garage, the gang was unusually quiet.
They were each going through their costumes, preparing for trick-or-treating, but their thoughts kept drifting back to Dr. Spookyman. After learning of his tragic past, they couldn't shake the sadness that came with the memory of his daughter's photo and his desperate, broken smile.
Jack looked up, breaking the silence. "You know... Halloween's supposed to be about fun and bringing people together. Dr. Spookyman could really use that."
Cristena smiled slightly, her eyes lighting up. "You thinking what I'm thinking?"
In minutes, they had gathered spare costumes, old decorations, and some wire hangers to build a wobbly skeleton costume. When they were done, the makeshift costume looked a little lopsided but endearing, complete with a floppy paper-mache skull hat and jangly bone arms made of taped-together broomsticks.
They packed it up and headed to the mansion, where they found Dr. Spookyman sitting on his front steps, lost in thought, gazing at the empty streets with the photo of his daughter clutched tightly in his hand.
"Uh, Dr. Spookyman?" Riland called out hesitantly.
He looked up, blinking in surprise as they held up the skeleton costume. "What... what are you doing here?"
"We wanted to invite you to come trick-or-treating with us," Cristena said, holding up the costume with a smile. "And we thought you might need a costume, so... we made you one."
Dr. Spookyman's eyes widened, and he looked between them, surprised and touched. With a shaky smile, he took the costume and put it on, looking every bit the spooky skeleton as they all laughed and cheered.
They set off together, Dr. Spookyman joining them as they went door to door, collecting candy and laughing at each other's silly costumes. For the first time in what seemed like ages, Dr. Spookyman smiled genuinely, joining in their laughter as they paraded down the street.
As the night wound down and they all dumped out their candy bags on the sidewalk, Dr. Spookyman noticed something odd—every Snickers bar in his bag was gone. A gentle, warm feeling settled over him as he remembered his daughter's love for that exact candy.
He gazed up, smiling as he whispered softly, "Thank you, Amelia."
The gang shared a knowing look, feeling a warmth in their hearts as they watched Dr. Spookyman, who finally had something he had missed for so long—a Halloween filled with joy, friends, and the memory of his daughter close by.
The Halloween night ended on that peaceful note, under the glow of streetlamps, as the town settled into a cozy silence, with everyone safe and happy once again.
