It had been a while since the gang had faced any major threats, and Oakside was enjoying a brief respite. Riland, still basking in the success of his pancake quest, was in a particularly adventurous mood. It was during this period of calm that he challenged Gutter to an energy drink contest. Gutter, recently reformed but still with a streak of mischief, accepted the challenge with a grin.
The two were determined to outdo each other, their competitive spirits ignited. The contest began in earnest in Riland's kitchen, which had been transformed into a makeshift drinking arena. The floor was littered with empty cans and the air buzzed with the artificial energy of the beverages.
The first few rounds were manageable, but as the contest continued, both competitors began to feel the effects of their choices. Gutter seemed to take the energy drinks in stride, but Riland, despite his usual resilience, began to show signs of distress.
"I'm fine," Riland insisted, though his voice was shaky as he cracked open another can. "Just a few more!"
But it wasn't long before the situation took a turn for the worse. Riland's face went pale, and he staggered, clutching his chest. Alarmed, Gutter called for help, and Riland was rushed to the hospital.
The doctors quickly assessed the situation and diagnosed Riland with a severe heart attack caused by excessive caffeine intake. He was admitted to the ICU, and the gang, along with Gutter, anxiously awaited updates on his condition.
Gutter, feeling guilty and concerned, stayed by Riland's side, hoping to make amends for his role in the reckless challenge. The hospital room was filled with tense silence, punctuated only by the occasional beep of medical equipment.
As Riland lay in his hospital bed, recovering from the frightening ordeal, the gang tried to lighten the mood. They brought in balloons, cards, and other get-well-soon gifts. They even tried to joke around to keep their spirits up.
Suddenly, a loud and thunderous roar echoed through the hospital hallway, causing everyone in the ICU to jump in surprise. The roar was followed by a series of loud footsteps, growing closer and closer.
The gang's hearts raced with fear. "What is that?" Jack asked, eyes wide with alarm. "It sounds like something out of a nightmare!"
The door to Riland's hospital room burst open with a dramatic crash, and everyone turned to see a gigantic figure standing in the doorway. The figure was covered in what looked like fur, and its size was imposing. It was none other than Bigfoot—at least, that's what it appeared to be.
Riland's friends gaped in shock and confusion. "Bigfoot?" Cristena said, her voice filled with disbelief. "What's he doing here?"
But as the figure stepped into the room, it became clear that this wasn't Bigfoot at all. The so-called "Bigfoot" let out a boisterous laugh, and the illusion fell apart. The figure's fur was nothing more than a costume, and underneath it was Tom, a local resident known for his eccentricities.
"Surprise!" Tom exclaimed, holding up a large, brightly colored get-well-soon card. "I thought I'd drop by and bring some cheer!"
The gang stared at Tom, their shock transforming into a mixture of relief and amusement. Riland, despite his weak state, managed a weak chuckle. "Tom, you idiot," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "You almost gave us a heart attack."
Tom grinned sheepishly, setting the card down beside Riland's bed. "I just wanted to make sure you felt better. Thought a little humor would do the trick."
The gang couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity of the situation. The tension in the room dissipated, replaced by a lighter atmosphere. The get-well-soon card, decorated with cheerful messages and drawings, brought a smile to Riland's face.
As Riland continued to recover, he and Gutter exchanged a heartfelt apology. The incident served as a stark reminder of the risks associated with their reckless behavior, and they vowed to be more careful in the future.
Chapter 37 ended with the gang gathered around Riland's hospital bed, their spirits lifted by Tom's unexpected visit. The ordeal had been frightening, but it had also brought them closer together. Riland's recovery was a testament to the strength of their friendship and the power of laughter in the face of adversity.
