The dining room was full of people. They laughed and spoke. Lola took a bite of her dinner. It tasted real.
Her father was complaining about politics. Her mother about the HoH. Someone had put a plastic flamingo in their front yard. Her father said they had the freedom to do as they pleased. Her mother said it was tacky.
They had asked Lola what she thought. She liked the flamingo. It was very pink. Lola liked blue. And pink.
Her mother claimed that she would demand for its removal. She took a bite of broccoli. Her father took a drink of water. The military needed more money. The military needed less money. The military needed to get a grasp on those aliens. The military was trying their best.
Lola didn't know what to say. Her words went dry.
There were noises outside. Stomping. Gunshots. Screams. Lola closed her eyes. Her father pushed her to a closet. He grabbed a gun. Her mother followed him. She didn't see them. When the sun peaked from the hill, Lola stepped out. She wore her red rain boots that day. It masked the pools of blood.
They were placed in a pile. Large, hulking, aliens threw the bodies. She could see her teacher, Miss K, her jaw cracked open. Her mouth bleeding red.Lola couldn't stomach the sight. Her body retched. Her stomach groaned. Her eyes squeezed shut. The smell never faded. It wouldn't for days.
There was a funeral eight days later. Lola was the only one from the town. If some lived, they had left. Lola would too. But Lola couldn't.
An alien apologized. He was red and blue. He vowed to never let such tragedy occur on Earth again. Not one that was caused by his own species. There were no bodies to place in seals. The ashes from a fire were the only remains. Lola placed a chrysanthemum by each headstone. She was there for many hours.
She went to school. She went home. She did it all. She did it in her red boots. She never had time to clean them.

"Soundwave," Lola tore her eyes from the small screen playing the same show. It always played the same show. It always was the same episode. It always was the same part.
The Cybertronian looked down at her, the visor now being tilted towards her direction. Lola felt her throat constrict, but was able to make out a weak statement.
"I'm hungry."
