Nick honestly wondered how Charlie did it.
No, seriously, how'd he do it? How'd he managed to make such a perfect little human being that currently was asleep on his chest after wailing her lungs out was beyond his brain, yet, here she was, after 15 hours of labor and a whole lot of comical setbacks, their daughter was perfect and like her father, sleeping off the last couple of hours of events as Nick watched on.
When Charlie had first offered to carry their baby, Nick had been thunderstruck. Charlie had done so much work over the last decade to be able to look at himself in the mirror without cringing. Not only with the eating issues.
He knew Charlie was trans obviously, and he knew he hadn't gotten the parts removed or tied, so he'd just completely forgotten about all of it as he focused on loving Charlie for the person he was. Which was his boyfriend. His currently exhausted boyfriend that was looking at him from his hospital bed.
"Hi." Nick whispered, Charlie smiling a little before he whispered "Hi." back in a tired tone. "How you feeling?"
"Glad I'm not jumbo anymore for one." Charlie joked, eyes a bit glossed over. "Ask me later when the nerve block wears off and it'll be more honest."
"Fair." Nick whispered back, voice still at a low tone as their little girl snuffled in her sleep and turned on Nick's chest before settling again.
God, she was so perfect.
"She's perfect, right?" Charlie murmured as he watched them interact and Nick grinned, still wet eyes somehow not cracking more tears like he had earlier. That had been messy...and embarrassing. (The security camera footage would have been hilarious.)
"Completely, love." Nick finally said after a moment, choked up. "How'd you do it?"
"Magic." Charlie smirked, despite wincing a second later from the action. "Magicians never reveal their secrets, Nicholas."
Nick just shook his head. "Well, whatever the secret is and wherever it is inside you, thank you."
"You're welcome, Papa." Charlie yawned and Nick almost cried again at that, but held it in long enough until Charlie fell back asleep again. A Papa, gods he was finally a Papa.
Totally worth crying over, actually.
