Four years ago...
"Why is it that you can't stay out of trouble for more than a minute?" Yvette towered over her son, her frustration palpable.
Rico remained silent, avoiding eye contact as his mother continued her tirade. It was a repetitive cycle, his attempts to explain always falling on deaf ears. He hadn't asked for any of this; he never wanted his mother to compromise anything for him. Yet here she was, blaming him for everything.
"Can I leave now?" Rico grunted in frustration.
"No, you can't. I am not finished with you. What will I tell the Northern Kingdom when they are ready for you?"
"Tell them I answer to no one. I am the rightful King of the Supremes. I will do as I please." Rico's voice was cold, a reflection of the anger brewing within him.
"As a King, you have to uphold the traditions of the realm. It does not mean that you have the authority to change the rules and do as you please. It is your duty to mate with Princess Amelie, not with some weak human!" Yvette's voice was laced with frustration and disappointment.
"Do you think that I wanted to be with a human? Mom, I told you what happened already. It was partially my fault as I should have controlled myself and not bit her."
"Partially?" Yvette asked, astonished.
"Whatever," Rico brushed it off. "She was the first human I have ever bitten. I did not know that would have been the outcome. I never wanted to kill her."
"Rico, there is a reason we do not drink human blood. It creates a bond that is unbreakable unless there is death." Yvette rubbed her temples. "We have to move out of town for now. It makes no sense staying here."
"I am sorry, mother," Rico lowered his gaze.
"Do not apologize. I wanted to move from this place anyway. That sneaky Guardian, Aamarah, gave away Princess Amelie after I directly told her that I wanted to keep her for myself. Who does she think she is?"
"Mom, are you still carrying on about that? Wasn't that about thirteen years ago? In the end, she has to disclose the Princess's location to her Queen."
"And you think that she hasn't done that? The foolish Queen knows that Aamarah is hiding the location from me. All she had to tell me was that the time had not come for my son to mate with her daughter. What will they say after they found out that you mated with a human!"
"I did not mate with her!"
"Why?" Yvette looked at her son, confused by his decision.
"I found out the reason she did it. It was a dare she had amongst her friends."
"That makes it even worse!" Yvette protested.
"Mom, I am not finished," he interrupted her. "She had no bad intentions when she did it. I sensed her emotions and all I could feel was confusion, anxiety, and fright. Those are the basic essentials of prey in the presence of a predator. She was not confrontational. I threatened to kill her, but I won't, and I can't either way as she is now my mate."
"Rico, are you missing the bigger picture?" his mother was now irritated. "When we return home, all four kingdoms will expect the next King of the East to be with his soul carrier! That is the pact sealed and signed by the gods. You can not just carry a mortal to our dimension!"
"Mom, I do not think that Kate is just a mere mortal."
"Excuse me? Then what is she then? Queen of the mortals?" His mother mocked.
"I do not know much about human blood as hers was the first I have tasted, but I know it should not have so much power radiating through it."
"How does that even make any sense to you? Are you saying that she is a vampire then?" He shook his head no. "Okay, a witch?" Another headshake showing no. "Then what is she?"
"She is a human mom, but she is more than that," Rico said, frustration evident in his voice. "I do not know how to explain it!"
"I know how to explain it," Yvette revealed. "It's called teenage hormones. This is what we are going to do. We are going to move from here until Cassius comes and stays with us. Then we are going to move back to Bayside. You will have to correct your wrongs if you want to go for your father's throne." For a minute, Rico thought that he saw a look of concern on her face. "When we go back you will either have to revoke the throne or kill Kate."
