Favour couldn’t move her attention away from Harmony Williams even if she wanted to. She had the feeling that something was going to happen, and that something had to do with the self-righteous girl.
She watched as Harmony made her way towards Jemimah. From their hand gestures, she could tell they were discussing something about the party. Jemimah had asked Favour to help out with the hall decorations but she had turned it down. She had more important things to do. Like figuring out why she always seemed to freeze whenever she was anywhere near Harmony.
For the first social night without an adult supervision, the school prefects were doing a pretty good job. After much sweet talks and persuasion, the Ss3’s had succeeded in getting Mrs. Dike’s approval to hold an only students party. With the staff that usually hung around totally gone, the alcohol was for the final years to enjoy. And from the atmosphere, Favour observed they were doing justice to it.
The decorations were top notch too. A drink pyramid stood to the left just after the stage, very close to the space reserved for the Ss3 students. And the lightening in the hall was enough to make a blind man see again.
It's been barely five days since the first message and something told her that whoever was responsible for it was ready to strike again. With the social night ongoing, the students were forgetting about the rumors little by little. And she felt somewhat relieved. A new message would take the attention and gossip away from her. From what she had gone through the past few days, that was a welcome idea.
Favour’s eyes caught a familiar figure. She momentarily forgot about Harmony and the drink in her hands. For a split second, she wanted to swallow her pride and just talk to him. She wasn’t going to admit it to anyone but a part of her missed him. And very much.
“You know you could simply walk up to him and apologize,” came Meredith’s voice. Favour hadn’t noticed her approaching through the crowd.
With how noisy the hall was currently, a gun could go off and no one would notice. The Ss1 students had just concluded their drama and students were eagerly waiting for the next agenda which was the singing competition between Ss2 and Ss3.
“I know that,” Favour replied shortly, not moving her eyes from the figure.
“Why aren’t you doing it then?”
“Because I don’t want to.” She moved away from Meredith to get another drink when she noticed her empty cup. She took two cups from a passing tray and handed one to Meredith. With one chug, she emptied half of the cup, savouring the bitter taste of the alcohol. Just what she needed to get rid of the guilt gnawing at her gut.
Meredith shook her head and left Favour to wallow in her own company. The mere sight of Favour was starting to piss her off. She couldn’t stand the sight of Jayden hurting in the name of getting over her.
Favour heaved a sigh as Meredith left and returned her attention to Jayden. He was trying to take the microphone from its stand with one hand while the other one held a glass of what she presumed was alcohol. A smile gradually crept into her face as she watched him struggle with the task until Liam decided he had enough and went to help.
“Sorry about that. I was definitely trying to eat my cake and have it for a while there,” Jayden started which drew laughter from some students including Favour who chuckled lightly. “Alright, the next thing on our list here is the singing competition. And it will be between…”
Favour completely zoned out of his speech. She preferred the person making the speech better and decided to focus on him. Jayden was clad in an all white outfit, from his diamond earrings to the sneakers on his feet. The leather watch on his wrist was the one she got for him on his last birthday.
