'Oh yeah, I have to drop something off at the market, you guys can wait in the rice field nearby if you want. Great scenery this time of the year. Also, Seo-ah, hold on to them, they might fall off.'
'sure grandpa!'
...
'alright you guys can get off and go to the field, I might be a bit - 30 minutes.' Mr. Park said, getting out the truck, locking the door.
'grandpa can I go with them?' Seo-ah asked.
'no its too dangerous for you. Come with me to the market, I'll get you a lollipop.'
'okay!' Seo-ah replied, leaving with her grandfather.
'you getting off?'
'no.' Yooyeon said, staring into the distance. They were both seated on basically an empty road with the market behind them, but the market was quite quiet.
Seoyeon glanced over at Yooyeon, who was still staring off into the distance, and decided it was time for a change in the atmosphere. "Hey, do you think Mr. Park ever gets tired of being the neighbourhood's unofficial chauffeur?"
Yooyeon turned slightly, raising an eyebrow. "Why? You think he has dreams of being a race car driver?"
"Definitely! Picture this: Mr. Park zooming around the city, dodging traffic like he's in a Fast & Furious movie. 'Hold on tight, kids!'" Seoyeon said, mimicking an over-the-top announcer's voice.
A small smirk broke across Yooyeon's face, and she shook her head. 'I can't see him in a racing suit. He'd probably stop to help someone with their groceries first.'
Yooyeon laughed, quietly.
'Will you tell me now what's been going on since that night?'
'Can we not talk about that?'
The sound of the birds in the background was soft and somewhat distant, their calls a series of low, mournful notes that drifted through the air.
'fine.' Seoyeon replied.
A gentle breeze swept through the area, rustling the tall grass and rice stalks in the nearby fields. The breeze carried with it the faint scent of earth and greenery, mingling with the distant hum of life from the market. Seoyeon shifted slightly.
'Do you hate me, Seoyeon?'
'I used to ask myself if you've done anything to make me hate you.'
'Well have I?'
'Well, ever since I've met you, my life has gotten tougher. Whatever I do, I need to compare it to you.'
'You must hate me a lot for that, don't you?'
'I should. But then I tried to think it through. You were probably put in the same situation as me, that's why I can't force myself to hate you.'
Yooyeon sat up properly and met Seoyeon's gaze.
'what about you?' Seoyeon asked.
There was a pause before Yooyeon continued. 'You were the reason I got transferred. I was so angry at you, and my mum.'
