CHAPTER 1

"This is the house?" I exclaimed, shocked.

I turned my head over to where mum was standing and even she seemed a little shocked at how run down it was.

With the white paint peeling and the grass growing out of control, it really was a mess. It stood very low and the windows were dirty. Graffiti was sprawled all over the letterbox and the gate had no door. To be fair, just about every house in the street looked like this.

"I mean, we can paint it and cut the grass.." Mum suggested but even with the promise of that it was still a small and ugly house with a poorly designed architecture.

"How did we move from our house to this?"

I was so annoyed. We had a nice cozy house in Perth, which was in a good area and then mum's work made her redundant and the only law firms hiring were in this area. In Melbourne.

I'd travelled to the other side of the country for THIS.

"Mona, honey, after a year we'll be able to move from this area into the city. I just have to save a little."

I picked up my small suitcase that I'd bought with me and kept in the sigh that was bursting to escape. Our house in Perth hadn't been sold, we were renting it out and mum decided to use the rent we got from there to pay for the rent in this house so that whatever money she earned from work she could save.

I stepped inside the little house and despite the big windows in the hallway and in the rooms coming off the hallway, the houses next to us were so close hardly any light could get in.

Down the hall there was a small and outdated kitchen with Linoleum on the floor making it look cheaper than it already looked. There was mold growing on the walls and the fridge stood barely at my chin. And I was 5"2.

After opening many doors which led to the living room or bathrooms or bedrooms, I finally found a small room which looked like it could be mine. I had a bathroom coming off of my bedroom but it was very small and again, dirty. The cheap and tacky green painted walls made it even worse.

I then noticed that the house was already furnished which was strange because I thought that when people moved out they took their furniture with them and not leave for us to chuck out.

"Mum. What are we going to do with all their furniture?" I asked, walking down the hall and into her bedroom.

She sniffed and wiped her nose before answering.

"We'll use it, of course," she answered, in a dull tone.

I could tell she liked the house just as much as I did.

"But what about OUR furniture? It's much nicer than this junk," I answered, motioning to the small and old bed in the centre of her room.

"Yeah, well the terms of the people renting it to us was that we had to use their furniture."

I hated Melbourne already.
