Chapter 2

My new high school I was attending looked just as rough and poor as I expected it to be, considering the area that we now lived in. I hadn't eaten since yesterday, when we moved in because we weren't going shopping for food until today and although I searched high and low for a takeaway place, I couldn't find one. My stomach let out an unhappy growl and I prayed nobody heard it.

After asking directions to the office from numerous amounts of rude people who wouldn't answer back, I looked around more closely and realised that the administration building had been about 10 metres to my left the whole time. Maybe I should invest in a pair of glasses.

I entered the building which was much cooler than it was outside and walked up to the grey haired lady at the desk who was furiously typing away at her computer, unaware of my presence. After standing quietly for a few minutes I softly cleared my throat in hopes of drawing her attention away from the screen of the outdated computer.

"What do you need?" She asked, peering at me through her glasses.

I shifted uncomfortably from my left foot to my right pulled the corners of my lips upwards a bit.

"Can I please have a copy of my timetable?"

"Name?" She barked, turning back to the computer.

"Mona Neal," I replied, and she started typing furiously away again.

With a couple more clicks and the sound of a printer, the timetable was in my hand and she sent me off to find my classes, which I found pretty easily considering she didn't give me any idea of where they'd be located.

Although I slid in my English chair with a couple minutes to spare, the teacher still told me off for being 'late' which was so stupid and ridiculous.

He didn't seem to realise I was new and as he started with the lesson I stole a few glances at the rest of the class.

Although the school had a uniform, no one seemed to follow it as there were a range of different coloured hoodies and shoes and accessories. I was the only one who followed it and I probably looked so ridiculous.

What stood out to me the most, was a guy, with brown hair and lots of tattoos wearing a snapback in class, something the kids at my school in Perth would never have got away with. Any hats in class were confiscated and you didn't get them back until the end of the day.

The rest of the day was strange and people were very unfriendly. I learnt that this school was very laid back and the kids here seemed very low class. I wasn't upper class in the least but I knew that swearing at teacher's or touching girls without their permission wasn't ok; something they had yet to learn.

By the time the school bell rung, I was so glad to get out.

Since mum didn't start work for around a week, she could pick me up in the car.

"So how was school?" She asked as I slipped inside the car.

Some of our other suitcases we'd bought with us were still in the back and I guessed they'd stay there for a while considering I doubt my room could fit anymore clothes in it. It was ridiculously tiny.

"Fine," I answered shortly.

I didn't feel like reporting everything that happened back to her. Not that much had happened anyway. The people here were unfriendly and rude and I hoped that I'd meet someone nicer than the few people I had talked to.

"Make any friends?" Mum pressed, and tucked a piece of her brown hair behind her ears as she concentrated on the road ahead, quickly glancing at the GPS every now and again.
