Chapter 3
I threw my towel on the ground, pulled off my shorts and kicked off my thongs(flip flops). I sprinted down the beach, feeling the cool wind run through my hair and licking at my stomach and the warm sand oozed between my toes.
"Hey! Stop!" The male voice called out and I stopped dead in my tracks, surprised.
"What?" I asked, turning around and walking a little closer so I could hear him better.
As I neared him I saw he was around my age. Best guess, he probably went to my school. I wasn't sure how many schools were around this area but there couldn't be too many.
"You weren't going to swim there were you?" He drew a hand from his and placed it on his eyebrows to shield his eyes from the glaring sun.
What kind of stupid question..?
I looked at the water and then back at him.
"Isn't that what people wearing bathers at the beach generally do?"
I didn't mean to come off snarky but as the words left my mouth they sounded rude nonetheless and I hoped he didn't take it that way.
"Well you can't. There's stingrays everywhere there."
I looked back at the deserted water. I guess that's why no one swam there.
"Sit," He beckoned and patted on the sand next to him.
The guy seemed nice enough and I didn't have anything better to do so I complied.
"New to this town 'eh?"
I nodded.
"I'm Chris," He said, holding out a tanned hand which I shook.
"Mona."
"Mona as in Mona the vampire?" He joked, referring to a kid's cartoon T.V. show and I mock rolled my eyes.
"God you're so unoriginal," I laughed.
Throughout my childhood that had been the first thing people had said to me when they met me and although it was genuinely annoying, I didn't get annoyed when he asked because I knew he meant it as a harmless joke.
"So what year are you in?" Chris inquired and I told him Year 12.
Yes, I was 16 so technically I was meant to be in Year 11 but In year 7 I had been moved up a grade because I was bright.
He was an interesting person and we talked for a bit longer until I told him I had to go. I didn't exactly HAVE to go but it was getting cold and I didn't exactly come equipped. Chris was fun to be around and since we were in the same year I can imagine we'd have a few classes together. Which would FINALLY give me a friend at that stupid school.
-------
The rest of the week was fine and Chris was actually in most of my classes which was fortunate. I still hadn't really met any friends that were females but I wasn't too caught up on it because they seemed to all have their own cliques that I wasn't a part of.
On Thursday the wifi was finally set up and I was beginning to fall into a routine. This place was really becoming more appealing. Although, it was a rough area they had nice small parks and the beach was a fun place to go sit if you wanted to sit somewhere peaceful. It was on the outskirts of Melbourne so it was much quieter than the city.
Another plus of this town was that the school wasn't very big on giving homework which left my nights free for me to watch Netflix or go for walks.
Do you remember the guy with the tattoos and snapbacks? I did eventually find out who he was. Not necessarily for the right reasons though. It was mostly because the teachers always yelled at him. His name was Beau.
Currently it was Friday afternoon and I was walking home because mum and I had a fight this morning and she refused to pick me up. The fight was so ridiculous, she literally got mad at me because I forgot to put my cereal away.
I slipped my earbuds into my ears and took a different route than mum took when we drove home because I was going to the grocery store. I always had this habit of looking at the ground when I walked or ran which was strange and I barely realised I was doing it now. I had heard that there was a big party at some guy's house which Chris invited me to but I politely declined. Instead, I was going to get lollies from the store and then come home and have a horror movie marathon, which sounded much more fun to me than a party. I didn't exactly like parties but I liked getting drunk and high.
Suddenly, a searing pain shot through my head and I staggered back letting out a small yelp, my earphones falling out of my ears. I clutched my head in agony and looked up.
"What the fuck, watch where you're going," the voice yelled and I saw it Beau.
He now had coke spilled all over his white school t-shirt and I started apologising profusely.
"I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to," I gushed but he wasn't easing up on his frown.
"Fucking hell, you're so stupid," He snapped and I know before I was being polite but honestly even after apologising he was acting like a dick.
"Excuse you, but you should've been looking too," I snapped back and for a second he looked surprised that I spoke so angrily to him after being so polite.
"You're buying me a new school top, it's the only one I have," he retorted relentlessly, his frown got deeper the longer I talked to him and his muscles were tensed, knuckles white.
The cheek of him! I wasn't buying him another top for something that was his fault too. What kind of person only owns ONE school top anyway? Did he not own a washing machine!
"Honestly fuck off, buy another one yourself."
Before answering, I pushed past him and hurried on down to Coles.
