Chapter 5
I really wanted to get involved in a sport. Back in Perth, I did lacrosse but I highly doubt they'd have any of those sport teams in this small town. Maybe AFL at the most. When I played lacrosse it was always so fun and I loved my position; goalie. As brutal as the training and games were, it was a great way to meet different types of people that I usually wouldn't usually mix with.
It was now Tuesday afternoon and the sun was pouring in my bedroom windows which made me really wish the beach was safe to swim in. Surely there'd have to be SOMEWHERE in this town that was safe enough to swim! I couldn't imagine them going through summer and not swimming anywhere.
I guess I could phone Chris and ask him.
I pulled out my phone and scrolled down to his contact before hitting call.
"Hey Chris, it's Mona," I said when he answered.
"Oh hey Mona," he replied and there was silence on the line for a few seconds.
"So, I was just wondering if you knew any places that were safe to swim in this town?"
After a lot of um-ing and ah-ing he finally came to a conclusion.
"Yeah, I do but it's hard to explain. Do you just want to meet up at the beach and I'll show you?" Chris offered and I nodded before realising he couldn't see me nodding so I quickly said yes.
"Do you mind if I ask a friend along?"
"Yeah sure who?"
Not that I felt uncomfortable around Chris but I didn't want him to get any ideas that I was into him or something; because I wasn't.
"She's a girl called Raven."
There was silence on the line and for a few seconds I thought maybe her knew her and didn't like her. That would have been awkward! After what seemed like eternity a loud eruption of laughter burst through the line. What?
"What?" I asked Chris, trying to keep the annoyance out of my voice.
"I know.. Raven... she's right next.... to me right... now," he said, in-between fits of laughter.
Oh so she was his girlfriend? I felt bad for thinking that he'd take us going swimming as friends as me leading him on. I knew he wasn't like that.
"Oh, how long have you two been dating?" I asked and this time, I heard Raven join in the laughter.
"Am I on speaker?"
"Mona, he's my twin," Raven shrieked through the phone, after finally calming down from her laughter attack and I had to admit that was pretty funny.
After arranging that we'd meet at the beach in 20 minutes, I raced around the house like a headless chicken trying to find my bathers and towel and what not.
I raced to the fridge and grabbed and apple before getting out the house with 5 minutes to spare.
When I arrived at the beach, Raven and Chris were standing up on one of the dunes looking for me.
I have to admit that it's pretty comical how the only two friends I'd made at this school were twins. It never would have struck me that they were remotely related because of their polar opposite personalities.
"Are you ready to go?" Raven asked and I nodded.
We all chatted a lot as we walked down to the end of the beach. Raven said we have to walk along the rocks and around the cliff to the other side as a shortcut and Chris helped me learn which rocks were safe to walk on and which were wobbly and unsafe.
Once we got to the other side of the cliff, there was more beach but it still wasn't safe to swim in as there were still many stingrays.
This beach was a lot more isolated than the other with the only way to get to it was the way we came. It was like this beach had been dug out of the cliff because 3 sides were just cliff and the only side where there was none was the water.
"Where do we go now?" I asked them and Chris pointed to a natural cave in the cliff.
"I'm not going in there! There could be spiders or something."
I know how whiny I sounded but I had a terrible fear of spiders and the thought of being trapped in a cave was horrific. What if there was a landslide and the mouth of the cave got closed up? We'd be all dead.
"Come on, there's no spiders," Raven moaned and took my arm in hers before pulling me inside.
It was so dark and we had to crouch down and use our hands to lead us. Shouldn't we have bought a torch? I only knew we weren't about to die because of the fact I could hear Raven breathing in front of me.
The rocky floor scratched my palms and shins as I crawled along the cave and I knocked my head against the cave roof at least 3 times.
I looked straight ahead and although Raven's body blocked most of it I could see streaks of light bursting through.
Then, I saw Raven's body disappear with a splash below and a scream of excitement. One second she'd been crawling infront of me and now she'd gone. With her body out of the way, I could now see where we really were and my, it was magnificent.
Half a metre below the cave we'd been crawling in, was the clearest water I'd ever seen. Raven was having a wonderful time, splashing around and diving under the water.
The water was enclosed in a rectangular like shape so to the left and right of the water were rock floors that you could climb out of the water and sit on. Below me, the water lapped right up to the cave I was just crawling in. Above us, there was a big hole in the cliff which let through plenty of light and that answered my question as to why they didn't bring a flashlight.
"Go on, jump in," Chris encouraged from behind me.
Although my bathers were on, I had my shorts on top and a towel and thongs with me so I threw the towel and thongs onto the rock shelf to salvage them from getting wet but didn't bother about the shorts.
Taking a deep breath, I jumped into the water and Chris followed me. The water was cool and after swallowing some tentatively, I realised it was fresh water which meant that it wasn't connected to the sea.
