chapter 4: forgetful

I wake up to the sound of knocking on my door. I look around and quickly remember where I am, jackson.

"Coming!" I say while quickly jumping up from the bed and fixing myself quickly. I opened up the door to maria, but next to her was this woman.

"Morning y/n, this is Dina she volunteered to help, to get you started out"

I waved to her "hi Dina!" Dinas aura felt confident and excited. She quickly smiled and hugged me. I was taken aback from the hug. She pulled off after a second, "sorry" she says looking down.

"It's okay, just unexpected."

I haven't been hugged in years. The last time I remember a hug was when my sister died. lacey. All of a sudden I could remember her face and name more than everything.

"I'm gonna leave you ladies up to it, don't let Dina talk your ear off" maria says tapping her hand on dinas shoulder then leaving. I stared at Dina, getting out the shed then closing the door. "Hey uh perchance do you know what today is?"

"November 17th? Why?"

Great. I just met this woman and the first thing I ask her is what the date is. I'm so stupid..

"Back at the town- I never cared to check the dates, If something big happened mom would tell me"

I awkwardly itch my cheek and I catch Dina looking next to me a worried look on her face, did maria tell her? What does she know? Dina interrupts my thoughts, "are you hungry?" Before I knew it we were in front of the restaurant. I walk in awkwardly standing. I notice a few people staring but they quickly go back to getting their food.

A man quickly noticed me while handing me my breakfast sandwich. "Haven't seen you around here, are you new?" I quickly get startled staring at him before Dina talks for me, "this is y/n , she is still startled, go easy" I quickly feel my body release as Dina talked for me.

"Startled from what?" The man Says his expression going to concern. Dina glances at him for a second till he speaks again. "Oh uh I'm Seth by the way nice to meet you" I smiled and thanked him as I stood closer to the dinas side.

"Wanna sit down?"

"S-sure"

"We don't have to if you don't want, we can go eat outside" dina puts her hand on my shoulder smiling at me. "I want to I need to get used to it anyways" Dina sits down as I sit across from her.

"That's Seth by the way, he doesn't think before he speaks excuse him "

"I don't blame him he is just curious" I say unwrapping my sandwich.

"May I know a bit about you? I mean we are gonna be stuck with each other for a bit, I want us to at least be comfortable with each other" Dina says this with a generous tone, like she means it. This is the first time in my 19 years of living that someone even cared to ask about me. I didn't even know where to start.

19 years. 19. It was November 17th, it was my birthday. My first full day is having a new start and it's my birthday. God did I plan this trip stupid, I didn't regret it. I just wished my birthday came by sooner.

"Uh yeah! I draw, write, I mean that's about it I'm not a very interesting person"

"Oh come on!! There has to be more you seem so fun and whimsical."

"Whimsical?" I say before laughing, she lets out a laugh herself.

"Well I'm a huge animal person, like big time. I would just animals over people any day" I say smiling , I start to remember my bunny. And violet, before she passed at least.

Dina stares at me smiling "I could tell, did you own any animals before coming here?" I quickly looked up at her for a second I could see regret in her eyes, knowing my expression was probably draining but I quickly got back to a smile.

"I came here by horse, but a runner got to her. But besides that back up town I had a rabbit."

" A rabbit!?" Dina quickly gets excited "tell me more about this "rabbit"

I describe my rabbit to her. "His name is Ollie, he is brown, with some white and black on him, he is quite the joy"

I catch Dina pausing at me smiling before saying "I know the perfect job for you."

"And what's that?" taking a bite of my sandwich.

"You could help with the animals, we got quite the selection of farm animals, we eat them though... Will that affect you"

"Maybe a bit... Maybe a lot, it's different when a human dies, but when it's an animal you have gotten attached too? Man you're used to people dying but the moment it's a furry being you shut down- well that's me at least" I awkwardly chuckle at the end.

"You would work great with the horses then" Dina claims.

I didn't know how to talk without trauma dumping. Couldn't say one proper sentence without making it sad. I had a hard time talking to people since i was such a loner all the time.

Dina pauses before I speak again "well how about you, what should I know about you?"

"I have a son, named JJ he is over a year old, and I like animals too, maybe not as much as you but I sure do love me a fur baby"

"You have a son?" I say erratic. I don't know why but me and her just click. I've known her for a few minutes and I feel like I'm talking to a future best friend.

"Gosh why are you saying that like I'm your age or something" Dina says before chuckling.

"Because you seem so young!"

"You think I'm that young?? God no I feel quite old myself"

Me and Dina both laugh before finishing our food, we head out continuing to chatter before something catches my eye. It was Ellie.

Dina noticed me staring and said "oh her? Maria told me you had something to do with her... Can't know details- but that's Ellie- well you probably know that.... But  lyou two would actually get along, she isn't a talker like me though" I look back to Dina my eyes widening. "Maria told you- about me?"

"Oh no not everything of course not maria would never, she just told me you were in a rough situation, family issues and Ellie was somehow linked because of the fireflies." She quickly sighs and puts her hand on my shoulder. "Y/n you have nothing to worry about your safe here, and from what it sounds like your gonna have new friends. Your okay."

I look down and take a deep breath. By new friends I know she meant her. I knew nobody else would want to talk to me, I didn't mind I was quite the loner anyways. But when Dina talked to me it was different. I just met her, yet her  presence brought me comfort.
