The days following their quiet evening at the café were filled with stolen glances, soft smiles, and a growing anticipation for the next time they'd be alone. Yet, as the set buzzed with energy and the daily routines continued, Clarissa noticed subtle changes in how others looked at her. Whispers started to circulate, small comments that hinted at suspicions. She brushed it off at first, but soon the murmurs became hard to ignore.

One afternoon, while she was focused on adjusting a scene on set, a colleague approached her with a look of concern. "Clarissa," they began hesitantly, "I... I heard something, and I thought you should know. People are starting to talk about you and... Mr. Kelly."Clarissa felt her heart sink, her pulse racing as the weight of the words settled in. She'd always known that a connection with someone like Gene Kelly would draw attention, but she hadn't realised it would happen so soon. The thought of becoming a subject of gossip, of her relationship with Gene being scrutinized by others, made her feel exposed and vulnerable.

Later that evening, she decided to confront Gene about it, needing to know if he was aware of what was happening. They met in a quiet corner of the set after everyone had left, and Clarissa could see the tension in his face as soon as she brought it up.

"Mr. Kelly, I think... "

"Hey, what happened to Gene? I want you to call me that, already told you."

"Sorry. I just think maybe we need to take a step back," she said, her voice trembling as she tried to gather her thoughts.

"People are talking, and I don't want to be the reason you... I mean, your career—"

Gene's eyes softened, but his expression was serious.

"Clarissa, I don't care what people think. They'll talk no matter what. But what we have..." He reached for her hand, holding it tightly. "I don't want to lose this."Clarissa swallowed, her heart breaking a little as she looked down at their hands. "I know, Gene. But I also don't want to be the reason you lose something you've worked your whole life for."The silence between them grew heavy, filled with a mixture of frustration, fear, and longing. Gene gently tilted her chin up, his gaze intense and unwavering. "You are worth more to me than any rumour or role, Clarissa. But... if you feel like you need distance, I'll respect that."Clarissa's throat tightened, and she could barely bring herself to look at him. She knew this wasn't what either of them wanted, but the fear of hurting him or jeopardizing his career felt overwhelming. She nodded slowly, letting her hand slip from his grasp. As she walked away, her heart aching with every step, she felt a sense of loss she hadn't anticipated.

The connection they'd shared, the warmth and safety she'd felt in his presence, now felt like something distant and unreachable. But even as she tried to convince herself that stepping back was for the best, a part of her knew that this wasn't the end. Their story was far from over — but for now, they would have to face the distance, each carrying the silent hope that fate would bring them back together.
