"Damn." Ben plops down on the ground, wiping sweat off his forehead. "You. Are. Smitten."
I sit down across from him. Reveal my water bottle from of my backpack. Take a few sips. "You're crazy. How long has it been since she killed Stan? I still half-heartedly hated her back then."
"It's been seven months," Ben says dryly.
"Oh— eh... how long has it been since Nick died? I also didn't really talk to her back then."
"Five."
"Well, what about—"
"Just admit it. You like her."
"I think we're moving a bit fast here."
"Now that is exactly what went through my mind when you made the overnight decision to no longer hate Zee and become as close as sticky notes," Ben calls.
"I did not mean for us to get that close so fast. It just happened."
"Like Newt, a wise boy, once said: you are soulmates who just had to get past the hatred. That happened, and now there's a lot of progress. Too much progress!"
I frown. "How can there be too much progress?"
"For starters, you can't shut up about her. It's kind of annoying."
"I had to deal with your annoying ass for months while I was going through a yearly depression. You can't complain. And it's not that bad to hear about Zee."
"That last sentence proves my point," he murmurs. "Why do I feel like I'm the single friend who tries to give love advice to those who aren't even listening in every universe?"
I take a bite off my sandwich—which, fun fact, was made my Zee, as she's now trying to figure out if being a Cook is her thing—and roll my eyes.
When I look back down at the lunch box, I find out there was a note hidden below the sandwich.
Good luck and don't forget to not forget me again! I hope it's tasty
— PuaBen watches me as I chew, a smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. "Yeah, you're smiling again."
"Shut up. At least she makes us lunches that aren't the same every single day."
"Oh, I'm not complaining." He stretches his legs out. "I'm just pointing out that it's a little... convenient, don't you think?"
"Convenient?"
Ben shrugs, but his eyes say he's about to make my life difficult. "Look, I'm not saying you're in love with Zee. I'm just saying you're a little too invested in where she ends up during the day."
I toss the tiniest stone at him. "She's literally the only girl here, Ben. Technically, we're all a little invested in what she's doing. You included."
"Yeah, but only one of us gets this defensive about it." He smirks, dodging the stone. "And it's not me."
